Circumstances and doubts involved in making such a decision may add to the difficulty in selecting a suitable home. "Most people first want to know all about the health care the resident will be receiving," says Kristol McBride of Larsen's Nursing home in Lehi. "They want to know if the home is licensed, what medical staff is on hand and what recreational activities are offered." Experts agree an important step in choosing a nursing home is to consult with the patient's personal physician. A physician can provide help in determining rehabilitation potential, recommended treatment, and dietary and personal care needs. The doctor may also be able to suggest homes and other sources of information. The first provides care for long term and convalescent patients with a variety of medical conditions. The second offers the resident a safe living arrangement with regular and emergency health services, when needed. The ideal is a facility which provides good nursing care in a clean, cheenul, homelike atmosphere. Social programs should be available and spiritual needs met.
