Receiving $5,000 Research and Creative Arts Awards for special projects were Dr. Samuel R. Rushforth, professor of botany; Dr. Lee D. Hansen, professor of chemistry; and Dr. Bruce A. Chadwick, professor of sociology. Five Distinguished Teaching Awards of $1,500 each were presented to VerDon W. Ballan-tynAssociate professor of English; Dr. Frank W. Fox, professor of history; Dr Kay B. Franz, associate professor of food science and nutrition; Dr. Robert C. Patch, professor of ancient scripture; and Dr. Edward G. Paul, professor of chemistry. The awards are named after Karl G. Maeser, pioneer BYU leader and professor, and are funded by contributions from the Karl G. Maeser Associates who each donate more than $100 annually to help BYU's campaign for academic excellence. Rushforth is recognized internationally for pioneering the field of diatom (microscopic algae) Recently, he has combined systematic work with quantitative ecological techniques to describe occurrences of diatoms in freshwater systems. He has written more than 70 scientific worldwide. He has written nearly 100 scientific articles. Chadwick, author of 35 articles in professional journals, has received acclaim for his participation in classic studies of community change in two "Middletown USA" research projects, analyses of religious life in Muncie, Ind. He is also a leading authority on is recognized ethnic and minority relations, American Indian studies and the sociology of marriage and family. Ballantyne has taught large classes of composition and beginning literature for many years, returning papers with copious annotations.
