High school lineman who never seem to get any attention, now have a chance to make their mark. Rule changes this year allow offensive lineman to use their hands in pass blocking. The change has helped in the college ranks, making it easier for lineman to protect the quarterback. Marion Tree, Executive Secretary of the Utah High School Activities Association, reports Utah is one of only a handful of states experimenting with .the new rule. He will give a report to the national association where consideration will be given to make the rule a part of the national high school There's good news for Region Eight teams this year hoping to advance to the state playoffs. Cedar City High School is no longer an obstacle. Last year, Spanish Fork High was forced into a play off with Cedar City in order to earn a state playoff berth. Cedar City High School has long been a problem for region organizers because it has the size of a 3A school, but is too far away from other 3A schools to be inluded in a 3A region. In order to cut down on travel a 2A time, Cedar City play schedule and then q."' for the playoffs by defea the Region Eight champi m. That system came under fire by coaches and fans alike. The answer? "Cedar is going to be a 2A school in Region 10. Those people (in Region 10) are not happy with that but Cedar is happy. It's the lesser of two evils," said Tree. That takes care of one problem but it isn't the final answer. Next year, the High School Activities Association will again make a region overhaul, realigning all the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools strictly by virtue of their location in the state.
