Show Thursday, August 30, im. THE KERALA, Prow, Vub By DOUG WILKS - Tom Holmoe the advice effective. The competitiveness of a spring practice doesn't often allow new players the opportunity to blend in with the veterans. Every player is fighting for a job and by necessity, one player's misfortune is another player's chance for success. But the help offered by Holmoe this day is characteristic of the man. now in his second year with the San Francisco Forty Niners. Hes simply one of the game's nice guys. At first glance, Holmoe seems among the hulking professionals that make up the frame Forty Niners. His carried only 180 pounds while he starred as a defensive back for Brigham Young University. He has sinced beefed up to 192 pounds, but still looks more suited for digesting financial reports rather than offensive receivers So much for looks. Holmoe has talent and the Forty Niners know it. At BYU, Holmoe's list of ac- complishments are highlighted by big plays. There was the interception and return for a touchdown against Washington State in the Holiday Bowl. Or the interception and race down the sidelines against powerhouse Georgia that one also good for six points. There were the seven interceptions to lead the WAC in 1980, resulting in honors on both the WAC and District Eight teams; that with two years left to play for the Cougars. He was the coaches choice for player of the game many times and always turned in an outstanding performance. Now he's working to carve a spot for himself with the Forty Niners. "I loved BYU. It's a good school and a good atmosphere. I really had a good time," said Holmoe. "You come here and it's a different story because its your job. It's the next level." Holmoe said he had no idea what professional football would be like when he joined the Forty Niners in '83. He came into it hoping for a chance to learn and gain needed experience. This year he's hoping to put that experience to good use to further his chances for a future in the NFL. it's a matter of pride. If you don't work your're not going to be there. I didn't think I had a lock on the team ( this year ) but I knew if I had a good summer I'd have a good shot at it," he said. "I really didn't know what to expect last year but they (the coaches) told me to go out and do the best I can. A graduate in Zoology, Holmoe once thought of persuing medical school. But each year with the Forty Niners makes a trip back to school sound less and less inviting. His newest diversion comes by way of the shoe industry. Holmoe worked in sales for a Forty Niner backfield was sound so I just did the best I could." Holmoe plays behind Dwight Hicks, another of the Forty No iners' defensive backs. That experience alone is providing a good training ground for Holmoe, who's quick feet and quick learning are expected to benefit San Francisco in coming years.
