Show THE HERALD, Provo, Utah; Thursday , August Paf e S6A 30. 1984 Juorferbock Comparisons Unfair, By MARION DUNN Herald Sports Editor Whenever there is a changing of the guard at quarterback for BYU the temptation to compare the newcomers with those greats of the past is almost overwhelming. ll But it isn't fair. As coach Edwards is fond of saying, "You can t compare our quarterbacks. Each of them is a different person and each does the thing he does best regardless of what the man just ahead of them did well." Okay. You can't compare them. BUT... .... The temptation is strong. BYU will have a new starting quarterback for the first time since 1982 when lefthanded Steve Young took charge against powerful Georgia after a tuneup against UNLV in the 120 degree heat of Las Vegas. As usual the Cougars have a line of fine young quarterbacks battling to replace Young. At this time it appears as if V k , J it, ' , . g" ''.V 6-- Wilson. And his arm. ..oh, boy... his arm. Bosco could be the most accurate passer of them all. He throws the long pass as well as Wilson did when he took BYU to that 11-- 0 Steve Heiner Photos. Blaine Fowler (left) and Robbie Bosco are BYU's top two quarterbacks. Bosco will start. regular season record back in 1979. Fowler, 0 and 184, could be the smartest of all the Cougar quarterbacks and that is saying a great deal. If you were going to give in to temptation and compare, you would have to say he most resembles Virgil Carter who took the Cougars to their first WAC championship back in 1965. Fowler does many things exceptionally well and his mark in leadership is a solid 10. Bosco is more of a straight drop back passer and Fowler more of a scrambler or roll-opasser. 6-- ut Bosco will be the first starting quartrerback for the Cougars who will start the season without the benefif of having started at least one game in his sophomore season. The Sheide, others, Carter, Gary Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon and Steve Young all had the benefit of hav- ing started as second-yea- r men. Last year Bosco served as backup to Young. In that role he completed 17 of 28 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. In the Utah State struggle. Young was sidelined for one series alter he took a blow to the head. Bosco took over and drove the Coogs nearly the length of the field to a touchdown. On this drive Bosco was 3 for 3 passing. Against New Mexico, Bosco went in after the game was put away and was 6 for 6 for 128 yards. In the final game of the regular . season, Bosco played the entire fourth quarter against the Utes. Fowler redshirted last fall but had a good spring game. Bosco was named the most valuable offensive player for the BYU jayvee team in his freshman year of 1981. In 1982 he redshirted and was the backup quarterback in '83. "Spotty Depth7 Chief Among Concerns For New SUSC Coach CEDAR CITY Spotty depth positions is the. only major concern for new Southern in some Utah State College football coach Don Conrad. There are some other worries, but none of major proportions. Many of those concerns are normal around any football camp: the worry over key injuries, the development of new and young players, and how well the team will adjust to the philosophy changes brought with the installation of a new coach. "We appear to have an excellent talent at nearly all positions; many of our players this season will be older and more mature; and I'm hoping that the change in coaches won't have any negative impact," Conrad said. "We are expecting between '80 and 90 prospective team members. I think we should be strong. Particularly, I would expect us to be stronger earlier in the year than we were I J; S.--- x--- J st the backup role. You can't, but if you were going to compare Bosco with any of the who preceded him in that role, it would be Marc Wilson, now apparently destined for stardom with the NFL champion Los Angeles Raiders. Bosco is 4 and weighs about 190 pounds. He is built like Wilson and is a quiet leader much like 176 junSteven Lindsley, a ior from Salt Lake City, is a second-teajunior college from Ricks College, is third string at this time. Lindsley e honors at Skyline earned High. He looked good in' the for spring game where he was 79 yards and a touchdown. Mike Young, younger brother of Steve Young, is back from his mission but missed spring drills. Mike is an impressive athlete. He recorded the fastest time in the team's annual mile run this fall. He was clocked in 8:04. Asked if he ran during his mission to Honduras, Mike said he got up early every morning and ran. "I made sure that I never got out of shape," he explained. And Mike Young is a fantastic prospect. He throws righthanded and throws well. He can also run with the ball. But missing spring practice is a handicap and Edwards hopes to redshirt Mike this fall and then have his services for the following three years. In 1982 Mike shared jayvee quarterbackmg duties with Bob Jensen and Jeff Wilcox. Wilcox has been switched to defensive back this fall and Jensen is on a mission. Another quarterback candidate 205 junior Zane Zamenski is of Townsend, Mass. who played at Ricks College. 6-- La-Ve- ;ur.;o: Robbie Bosco will be BYU s starting quarterback Pittsburgh on Sept. 1 with another junior. Blaine Fowler, in 3 ii last season, although we will have to work hard to be as effective as we were late in the year last season." Offensively Thunderbird opponents can expect to see SUSC use the veer as its basic offensive formation, although Conrad promises to use a number of offensive sets. Multiple offensive formations will be more common than last season. Part of the reason for that strategy is the number of talented offensive players. "We have the ability to either run or pass very effectively," Conrad points out. "We would like our formations to take full advantage of the abilities of our players." The potential problem for the offense is skinny depth along the line. "We need some young people to develop quickly to get the depth we'd really like," Conrad explains. all-stat- 6-- 8 6-- A freshman walkon Irom zona, bidding team.
