Show Thursday, August Prep Roundup tiXvs And guild- (rum hitfh spurt Herald Correspondent STRENGTHS: Team attitude. Players are strong on desire. Also, return of Keith Sperry and Steve Gleason should improve pass defense. WEAKNESSES: lack experience. Quarterbacks and offensive back-fiel- d all new. Line lacks size. PREDEICTED FINISH: Fifth The Timpview Thunderbirds lost 15 starters from last year's squad but hope a new emphasis on conditioning will compensate for the lack of experience on the gridiron. Sam Hard, who begins his third head coach, says year as in order for Timpview to be competitive in Region Seven this season, his team will need to be in better phvsical shape than it was in 1983. "Last year we had a lot of players who were suited up but not capable of playing as physically as we needed. This year, all those who dress to play will have to meet certain strength, speed and conditioning requirements," he said. Increased running and weigh-tliftin- g in the off season has given players added muscle, but Hard reports the improved conditioning is not necessarily the program's greatest strenth. "They have a real positive attitude and are working hard. They know if they don't have the heart to work hard, they can't win," he said. Timpview will be looking for returning 1983 second team all region players Keith Sperry and Steve Gleason to anchor the de fense and provide team leadership. Gleason, one of the region's leaders in interceptions last season, will team with fellow speedster Tom Jolley in the defensive will use a secondary. The new simplified pass defense, designed to stop the "big play" that hurt the team last season. Sperry played on the front line in '83, but will be shifted to linebacker for the '84 season. "We have a good bunch of new people we feel can do well on the line," said Hard. "We felt we had a greater need at linebacker and think Keith will be able to do well there." Hard said his line will be heavy .on aggressiveness, but light on take poundage when the the field. Bruce Jensen, at 225. would have been the biggest lineman, but he is sidelined with an eye injury and won't play this year. Hard says without Jensen, the line will average only 185 pounds. 'it's hard to say. I think are kids are all going to be pretty equal," he said. Hard will platoon his linemen if he believes each is capable of doing the job. Offensively, with the entire backfield lost to graduation, the Thunderbirds will rely on new carriers to move the pigskin. Senior Mike Miller, a back-u- p fullback last season, is expected to start alongside either junior Justing Anderson, or senior John Strong. Each is battling for the starting halfback spot. Also battling for starting posi- games. "If they stay equal they'll all play," said Hard of his quarterbacks. Gleason and Jolley will provide a good target for either quarterback as they return to lead the receiving corps. Despite the lack of proven returnees, Hard is optimistic about the season. He said the players are more together this year than last year and have a greater desire to win. Timpview's desire into may just carry the the playoffs.
