Those who do allow their players to get married aren't convinced that it's good lor their programs or the players. Combine that attitude with the new morality and the result is, lew lootball wives are on college campuses. That isn't the case at BYU. Football, love, marriage, and wives all go together and are part of the program. Craig Garrick, offensive guard, and his Dana are the newlyweds on the team. They were married one week before fall practice started. Their Provo reception was held the evening ol the first day of practice. This year there are 25 married Eleven players were players. married during the summer. Last year there were 32 married players, and three babies were born during the season. They know, or soon learn, what it means to pay the price. And they deserve to share in the recogni- tion that is lauded upon their husbands. Being a football wile in college means being poor. The majority ol wives work. Married players have a hard time living on the s that the husband gets lor playing lootball. Often a wife will work at two jobs. However, one unknown record lor the Cougars is the number ol married players on the squad. BYU has more married players than any other loot ball team in the nation. tf it e Over, lime ror .wccon t s at two jobs. Her husband, Dave, plays tight end for the Cougars. The Mills also had a young baby. When Wendy wasn't working she was busy caring lor her baby. Brenda Fowler expresses the same sentiment about leaving her eight-mont- h old son when she goes to work. Brenda's neighbor is her official baby tender. Blaine, Brenda's husband, plays quarterback lor the Coogs. Marc Wilson's wife. Colleen, used to tend children in their apartment. Marc's contract with the Raiders should provide Colleen with a few luxuries. She is entitled to them, because she earned them while Marc was in school. Some working wives have jobs that include working Saturdays. It's not much fun tending the store while hubby is playing football. The majority of bosses allow these gals to have Saturdays off during "the season. I say. "Thanks! Because money is a problem the wives will take their babies to the football games. As I watch these young gals wrestle their babies, my respect for them continues to grow. Our children weren't allowed to go to a loot-ba- ll game until they were live. Many players have a redshirt year. Most ol them will say that it's the hardest year they spend in lootball. The players practice every night; get bumps and bruises; put in the time, but don't get to play in any ol the games. It's the wife who bridges the gap Irom discouragement to encouragement during the redshirt year. Last year after the Utah State game I saw Mindy Hudson at the dressing room. Gordon had been hurt during the game. Her concern lor him was etched on your young lace. The moral support that a wife gives to her husband at this critical time can't be measured. Ask Gordon Hudson. Wives as well as their husbands are students. While Larry Hamilton plays delensive tackle lor the Cougars his wife, Tami. plays for the women's volleyball team. Larry spends five hours day on football and Tami's schedule is similar.
