And how are they going to do that? "We'd just like to keep people from scoring and try to do well offensively," said Davis Knight, head coach of the Cavemen. Those words echo the sentiments of probably every football coach in the land. For it to come true in American Fork, the Cavemen coaching staff must mold together a new group of offensive players and effectively use its strong front line. The Cavemen bring an inexperienced offensive attack into this year's campaign and will try to rely on the leadership of senior captains Chad Robinson and Travis Hansen to take the title. Hansen is the lone returning offensive starter and will split time at flankerback and running back. He's been a consistent performer for the Cavemen since joining the varsity as a sophomore. Robinson, also preparing for his third year on varsity, will take over the quarterbacking chores for the Cavemen in an effort to replace the fine performance of Brock Knight. Knight, a 1984 graduate, is back East throwing baseball's for a living in the Boston Red Sox organization. Robinson started last year defensively as a linebacker. Coach Knight reports he will be moved to safety to help strengthen the secondary. The move will also keep the quarterback from the physical abuse faced by linebackers. Senior David Smith will return at split end. He was not a starter but received enough playing time to give defensive backs plenty of trouble. Not a big player, Smith relies on good hands to get the job done. On paper, the lack of offensive returnees may be cause to worry. But American Fork sports a fine group of junior varsity players and will surely benefit from a strong off season of conditioning. "I don't know of a high school team that isn't always rebuilding. Every year your essentially rebuilding. We don't have all of our starters back but I have a nucleus of seniors and solid junior varsity players. I'm real optimistic about the quality of the athletes and the way they've been working in the off season," said Knight. Approximately 15 players attended a football camp at Utah State University during the summer to gain necessary strength to make an improvement of last year's 4 record a realistic goal. defensive help from former BYU standout Mike Morgan. Morgan, resting from a successfull USFL season with the Chicago Blitz, will handle the line. Mark Scovil and Bob Eckles will coach the defensive backs and linebackers and also provide offensive help. "The key just might be us as a coaching staff pulling everything together. The kids really want it," said Knight. Backing up Robinson will be junior Todd Glover and senior quarterback Cory King. J R.
