First, he needs to find a quarterback to replace Mike Norseth. last season's outstanding signal-callewho has moved on to the University of Kansas, where he is expected to be the No. 1 quarterback for the Jayhawks this season in the tough Big 8 Conference. Secondly, he 11 have to put together a completely new defensive secondary, since he lost all four starters off the 1983 unit. But he has some things he can smile about, too. Both his offensive and defensive lines, for instance, have good size this season and that was something that was lacking last season. His team also will be faster. We'll be bigger on both the offensive and defensive lines than we were in '83," Coach Criner emphasized. "That will be a big plus for us. And we'll have good overall team speed. 1984 r, d wing-foote- (5-1- 1, block-bustin- - r,UA vuh uesfions in Badger Camp (5-1- 0, Herald Sporti Writer ""iald. r g 4, American Fork High player, who recently performed in the annual Utah High School Game. After the scrimmage with Idaho State's JV, the Badgers will play at the Scottsdale Community College and at Mesa CC before playing their first home game against Phoenix College, which lost to Dixie in the Valley of the Sun Bowl last season. If we don't come up with a quality secondary quick, we could be in big trouble." There were around 115 candidates for the squad, when Criner opened the Badger grid camp on Aug. 22 and he doesn't have much time to whip his charges into shape for the season opener in Pocatello against the Idaho State Junior Varsity (which Coach Criner calls a scrimmage). Criner will have 28 lettermen returning from last season's team, including six offensive and six defensive starters. Among the defensive starters is Bob Armstrong, a tackle and former Payson High star, who was tower of strength for the Badgers last season. At 3 and 230, the tough and extremely strong Armstrong played consistently great football game in and game out. In Dracticallv evprv game, he was among the leaders in the number of tackles made. Coach Criner really gets excited when he talks about his linebackers and well he might with the likes of Ralph Merrill 185), Rob Cormier 190) and Greg Foster (6-- 212) hanging around. They are probably about as good a trio of linebackers as there is in the ICAC. All three of those linebackers started in 1983 for the Badgers, who were one of the ICAC last season. In addition to Armstrong, two other tackles are among the six returning lettermen on the defensive unit. They are Jeff Argyle (6-230) and Kent Lapa (6-225). Greg Lott, a former Provo High star, is among the offensive starters returning. A tackle, Lott (6-270) is questionable, according to reports, because of a back injury.
