"We're big for out here but By DOUG WILKS Herald Sports Writer small for out there.'' said Belcher, referring to the problems a smaller school faces. His STRENGTHS: Defense. Three of four defensive backs and all three linebackers return. Rod Hilkey, starter, returns at defensive end. Great commutwo-ye- team will rely on football sense in bounce back from Offensively, the ar as a sophomore but was sidelined most of the season with a knee injury. He's back with a strong arm. Belcher said his team will have a balanced attack but look for the Utes to throw more than they run. At junior receiver Todd Muvill provides a big target for Bartlett. Muvill started as a sophomore and has good speed and good hands. Bartlett and Muville may make more headlines than Mondale and Ferraro. Uintah's line is strengthened by the return of senior tackle 210 Joseph Lebeau. The pounder will play both offensive and defensive tackle. Senior Rick Porter also returns up front. The bad news for the Utes is its lack of a good strong fullback. Curt Monson, slated for the spot early in the year, moved to Texas, leaving the position wide open. The Utes do have a good, quick power runner in John Nash, but he'll handle the halfback chores. No big fullback to grind out the yards. Lack of depth makes any injury a problem. FINISH: There is nothing but optimism in the Uintah Utes football camp this year as head coach Curg Belcher welcomes 15 starters back to begin the 1984 season. Uintah suffered through a winless season in tough Region Seven last year but will benefit from the experience of a winning sophomore team and a year's growth. "We're optimistic. We only lost six kids from last year. We had an 2 sophomore team last year and they have a good attitude. I think the varsity will be up," said Belcher. While eight starters return on offense, it is the defense that should shine for Uintah. Senior Rod Hilkey is back for his third year at defensive and offensive end. "He's our strength. He wrestles, runs track and is just an 8-- Robert Belcher. Behind Hilkey on defense are three experienced linebackers in Greg Lieshman, Rick Porter and Shawn Sullivan. Add returning defensive backs Todd Muvill (free safety), Brian Smuin (cornerback) and Bob Ferreya (cornerback) to the list and the Utes spell experience. Newcomer Ken Campbell fills the fourth defensive back spot. It led the region for total gate receipts at football games last year.
