Show State prep hockey tourney continues DAVIS 5, ALTA 2 BOUNTIFUL Davis High skaters took one more step toward a 2A hockey title in the state high school hockey tournament Wednesday, defeating the Alta Hawks 5-2. The Darts' three-point win turned out to be an ugly, penalty -ndden affair featuring 28 penalties totalling almost 100 penalty minutes between be-tween the two teams. Davis took an early 2-0 lead as Tim Udy and Paul Anderson both scored first period goals for the Darts. Udy scored the game's first goals with 2:36 remaining in the first on a power play followed by Anderson's goal 48 seconds later assisted by Marcus Thompson. Alta also logged a first period goal with 33 seconds remaining to draw within a point of the Darts. I Midway through the second period, Alta managed to tie the score at 2, but the tie didn't last long. With 3:55 left in the second, Ander- j son put the Darts up for good, slipping his second goal on the night j (this one unassisted) past the Alta defender. Late in the third period Udy and Jason Nalder drove the final nails in the Hawks' defeat scoring a goal apiece. I Defensively, Davis goalie Matt Jamieson was credited with saves. I ALTA 4, BOUNTIFUL 1 After a brawl with Taylorsville that earned three of Bountiful s scorers game suspensions, the Braves fell to the Alta Hawks 4-1 in state tournament action Thursday night at the Cottonwood Ice Arena The loss ends the Braves tournament hopes as well as the Braves' j season. I Grant Golightly punctuated his final game as a Brave, scoring Bountiful's only goal. I Meanwhile, backup senior goalie Ryan Nakaya blocked 35 shots in the bout with the Hawks. "We definitely would have been in the finals if we would have had our whole team. We had to play with six skaters and a goalie. That means a lot of skating," Bountiful coach Mike Holmes said. EAST 3, VIEWMONT 1 Minus scoring ace Lester Lemon, who was named to the Utah Amateur High School Hockey Association's All-Star first team, the Vikings lacked the offensive prowess to overcome East Thursday night in round one of the 3A state hockey tournament. In his final appearance as a Viewmont Viking, Lance Oscarson batted away 41 East shots, but the defensive effort was not enough. Viewmont only managed 13 shots on goal, while East blasted the Viewmont goal 44 times. I Matt Vandertoolen logged the Vikes' only goal in the first period after East had taken an early 2-0 lead. East iced the win scoring in the third period. |
