A total of 1 ,549 incidents, in-cidents, with a loss total of j $145,916, were handled by the j district which serves five entities. In his recent annual report to the city council, Fire Chief Brent Argyle outlined the district's 1990 activities. His report indicated fire i activity and medical emergencies ! totals for each of the entities served, ; including North Salt Lake, Center- j ville, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and the unincorporated area of j Davis County. Argyle decried the fact that he has been unsuccessful in getting the legislature to approve a bill which would make it mandatory for smoke detectors to be used in every struc-; struc-; ture. Of the fires the district responded to in 1990, 72 percent were fires j where there was no smoke detector j or a smoke detector that was not j operating. "I've lobbied for three years and I can't get the legislators to pass a bill. We may just have to do this on a local level," said Argyle. He said legislators have expressed concern that mandating the use of smoke de tectors, "may seem like Gestapo activities. ac-tivities. All I can say is they save i lives,' said Argyle. 1 He added several communities have passed local ordinances to solve the problem on their own without the help of the state. Argyle recalled a fire in 1988 which killed i a father and his three children, deaths that might have been prevented if a smoke detector had been used in the home. Argyle praised the efforts of the men and women of the district who risk their lives to fight fires. "Thanks to their efforts, not one life was lost during 1990," Argyle said. The district operates out of three stations. Argyle said he was proud of the fact that the average response time in 1990 was only four minutes. There were 65 vehicle fires in 1990, "It's interesting to note, that only a few of the vehicle fires occurred oc-curred in foreign vehicles,' quipped Argyle. He explained he is often "razzed" about driving a foreign for-eign car. Chevrolet led the list with 16 fires, followed closely by Ford with 14. The district also provides ambulance am-bulance service through the South Davis Ambulance Association to each of these entities and Farm-ington. Farm-ington. The largest number of responses in 1990, 1,118 of the 1,554 total, were for medical emergencies, with North Salt Lake leading the list with 227. Hazardous material responses were at an all-time high in 1990 with 65 calls. Argyle explained this number will continue to grow with the expansion of industrial facilities in the county. He added the department depart-ment is continuing its training of its special teams which deal with hazardous materials. Argyle thanked Mayor Jake Simmons, who serves as chairman of the fire district board. "He has done a great job, and we really appreciate ap-preciate his leadership," Argyle said.
