Show (MB raraaFDHBg TOPE Ring bells Editor: The sound of bells is the sound of history full of beauty, poetry and song. Now that the Gulf War is won, bells will be rung to express gladness and gratitude to the heroes corning home. Some states that have state bells and some cities that have city bells ring them on holidays such as the Fourth of July, President's Day and Veterans Day. In Mount Morris, 111. The official State Bell, a replica of the Liberty Bell was dedicated April 30, 1961 by Ronald Reagan, native of Mount Morris. Other cities and states are encouraged en-couraged to have bells and ring on patriotic holidays. During the Revolutionary War, the State Bell, later named the Liberty Lib-erty Bell, was rung to celebrate the victories of the Armed Forces. "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof," is the inscription taken from Leviticus, Chapter 25, Verse 10. In essence the 11-word message first given by Moses to the Israelites admonished all to proclaim themselves them-selves free from the bondage of sin; for that is what liberty and freedom is. Christianity and our soldiers have done much to strengthen the cause of brotherhood. Liberty has cost the American Soldiers a thousand hard fought battles. Nothing can be more elevating to ourselves and pleasing to God than the accomplishment of brotherhood. No nation or individual has the right to exercise any degree of unrighteousness over any other nation or individual. If this rule of conduct is violated, the cause of liberty, peace and brotherhood will suffer. Elwood S. Clark Farmington City suggestions Editor: As a design professional living and working in Bountiful City, may I express some views in regard to the proposed Towne Center development. de-velopment. A beautiful city needs a focal point, a space around which a mental men-tal image can be developed and remembered. re-membered. The image of a city lingers long after one has departed. A city's center usually creates this focal point and is generally a reflection reflec-tion of the goals, aspirations and care the community feels. Bountiful City has in times past had this type of focal point It was created by the varied stores and shops clustered around the grounds of the Bountiful Tabernacle. There was pedestrian activity, a sense of community, a sense of identity. It needed improvement to be sure, but not demolition. The direction the city fathers are taking to improve the area could eliminate our community's center. The downtown area has been slowly slow-ly dying because of the large quantities quan-tities of commercial developments that have been allowed throughout the city. It is important to have pockets of retail establishments at various locations within a city, but the quantity of our sprawling developments de-velopments has diluted the focus of t our downtown to near extinction. The Bountiful Towne Center plan would bring economic aid to the downtown area which is desperately des-perately needed, but the proposed layout would destroy our sense of community and heritage. It would be somewhat like putting the Fred MeyerAlbertsons development at the center of our Main Street. May I submit the following suggestions sug-gestions to the proposed plan. Eliminate Elim-inate the individual and sparsely placed retail buildings on the east. Move the other buildings much closer to Main Street Provide most of the parking areas to the sides or rear of the stores and develop areas of interest for pedestrians. Create a reason for people to be downtown in the evenings to take advantage of the new redevelopment redevelop-ment lighting. This can be done with theaters, restaurants and other businesses that remain open after six. Create a strong focal point or activity node directly across from the tabernacle. Prevent the use of pole signs. Continue the use of street planting and include a sense of the past in the new design. This does not mean a copy of old buildings but simply the use of historical sensitivity providing human scale structures. We cannot easily remove the damage that has been done to our city in the past but we can prevent it from continuing in the future. A development de-velopment for the downtown area should include pedestrian activity and interest It should be historically historical-ly sympathetic and, because of its location, it should be a source of civic pride.
