In the past, the hospital rented car seats to parents who needed them for a minimal and partially refundable fee. Kay Matsumura, CEO of Lakeview Hospital, decided that the hospital should not give the parents a chance to get in the bad habit of holding the baby in their lap, even on the ride home from the hospital. Although Utah has its "Law of Love" that requires all children i under the age of two to ride in an approved car safety seat, the state does not yet check to make sure all new parents have car seats for their ride home from the hospital. New York State will not let a new baby leave the hospital until there is proof pro-of that the baby will be riding in an infant safety seat. New parents whose babies are delivered at Lakeview Hospital will no longer have to worry about purchasing pur-chasing an infant car seat The Century Cen-tury model car seat that will be given away at the hospital has been rated one of the safest on the market according to consumer research. When Matsumura was questioned question-ed about the new gift, he replied, "We are concerned with all aspects of infant safety at Lakeview Hospital. Our pre-natal and birthing classes teach parents about some aspects of infant safety, but we have little control over what happens in the patient's home or even in their car. The free car seat is just one step toward making sure that the infant remains healthy after heshe leaves our hospital, and, of course, it also relieves the parents of the financial burden of purchasing a car seat. ' Lakeview Hospital recognizes that having a baby is an expensive proposition. Last month, the hospital launched its "Great Beginnings' Begin-nings' program that entitles its members to discounts at some area merchants, including Somebody's Mother, Motherhood, Children's Sampler, Malibu Fitness Center and Imperial Diaper Service.
