Show Braves, 'Cats boast talented track squads Vikes, WX enjoy byes while Darts, Braves win upset region track meets Wednesday Bountiful's other stars include juniors Elizabeth Mabey in the 1600 and 3200, Denise Jacobs in the 800, Carolyn Doxey in distance races, Becka Covey in sprints, Joy Mumms in the 400, plus Melissa Frod-sham Frod-sham and Robin Obom in relays and short races. Swedish exchange student Linda Kvamstrand will earn points in the field events for Bountiful as well. The Braves will be chasing league-favorite Murray for the region title, but look for Bountiful to do very well this year. WOODS CROSS WILDCATS A number of fine athletes return for the Wildcats this year, including sprinters Marcus Rhoton and Todd Hoagan, 200 meter star Brian Ashby, and distance runners Dave Marx, Robb Davis, Dave Pulham and Jason Anderson. Add to that group Matt Brown, Marcus Anderson, Brady Nelson, Ken Bullock, Sieve Pullman and Scott Gardner, and Woods Cross should do fine in the running events. Hurdlers include Pete McConkie, Craig Erickson and Troy Groberg. In field events, standouts thus far are Rhoton in the long jump, Chris Hansen in high jump, Bean Ettling and Justin Peters in both the discus and javelin, and Peters in the shot Among the Lady Wildcats, top returners include Maureen New land in the 200, 400 and relays, Heidi Selin in the 400, Michelle Devey and Noell Goodrich in the 800 and relays, Jenny Heap and Celeste Smith in longer distances, and Janae Lassig, Andrea Root and Angie Cook in hurdles. Sprinters also include Melissa Frasier and Tracy Hines. Amy Belliston should figure in the 800, Kandi Savage will score in the high jump and medley relay, and Amanda Ivie will help out in the 3200. In field events, Merridee Nielsen and Amy Pascoe should excel in the shot and discus, Cook in the high jump, Esther Haws in the high jump and long jump. Woods Cross probably does not have the depth to compete for the region title, but the Wildcats should have many individual successes this year. SEE TRACK ON A-10 the sprints and relays, Adam Tolman and Chris Godfrey God-frey also running sprints and relays, Jason Peterson in the 400 and 800 meters, and Lance Palmer complementing com-plementing Wilding in the 3200, the Braves are loaded. load-ed. Perhaps there are no finer track alhletes in the state than Wilding and Stock. The "Brandon connection" could produce as many as eight first-place finishes between be-tween them, including relays. Those points may propel pro-pel Bountiful to its highest finish ever in May's state finals at BYU. Among the Lady Braves, sophomore sensation Jenny Gardner should be the big story. You'll be hearing hear-ing and reading her name a lot the next three years for Bountiful, and in track, Gardner could also win any of the four events she'll compete in this year. The problem prob-lem will be limiting her to just four. Gardner will certainly high jump for the Braves, as well as throw the discus, run in rclavs and who knows what else. All-state cross country star Misa Graff, a senior, should also be a big point-getter for the Brave? if she can get healthy. Editor's Note: This is the second part of a two-I two-I purt preview of local prep track teams, today looking look-ing at Region Six foes Bountiful and Woods Cross. By TOM HARALDSEN I Clipper Correspondent BOUNTIFUL BRAVES I Coach Mike Maxwell may just have enough high-quality high-quality performers to capture the state 3A boys' track I title seriously. The Braves have shown that power I thus far in two early season dual meets. I Leading the contingent are all-state performers Brandon Stock in sprints, Brandon Wilding in the 800, 1600, 3200 and medley relay, plus hurdlers Jake Murdock and Phil Tate. All are seniors with the exception ex-ception of Tate, a junior. Bountiful also has power in field event leaders Kory Andrcasen in shot and javelin, and junior Wells Wilkinson in the high jump.
