" session, and Principal Jane Muna expressed her thanks to Kim, his father and the students who attended this most interesting in-teresting gathering. r a By BRUCE CULP Teacher Mueller Park Junior High Bringing with them a message of acceptance and tolerance for individual in-dividual differences, Kim Peek, the inspiration for the movie "Rainman," and his father, Fran, entertained an assembly of over 500 students and staff Friday afternoon at Mueller Park Junior High School in Bountiful. With this assembly completed, Kim has now addressed over 90,000 people in schools, conventions and "civic groups. Born with a brain deformity that fused the two hemispheres of his brain together, Kim (classified a "mega-savant") has photographic recall in many areas of knowledge, but yet he cannot remember how to do some of life's most basic chores. When asked, "Who was the pitcher pit-cher when Hank Aaron hit his record 715th homerun," "Al Downing!" was his instantaneous response. But at home, Kim is often unable to set the table for dinner because he cannot remember where the silverware is stored. Another student posed the question, ques-tion, "Where is Compton at?" "South L.A.!" Kim fired back. But Kim has great difficulty with motor skills and walks with difficulty. Kim, 39, has read over 7,000 books in his life, and encourages students to read as much as they |
