Show 20-mv!e team to cfiip at North Pmk A 20-mule team and wagons will pass through Springville today at about 2:00 p.m. and stop for the night at the North Park Rodeo Grounds. The team is on its way from Death Valley, Val-ley, California, to Wessington, South Dakota and celebrating the 50th anniversary of The National Park Service and first anniversary of Cowboy Park, a large camp ground in Wessington. Wes-sington. DeHaven in a personal interview inter-view stated that he organized the treck in his own personal search for adventure and to give the people of the West a chance to see first hand what a real mule team looked like which were quite common in the early pioneer days. I has since traveled through Las Vegas, Nevada, Hurricane, the Fingers Area of Zion National Park, Cedar City, Richfield and Mt. Pleasant. The team is .controlled by a "jerk line" 100 feet long and attached to the lead mule. The driver thus controlls the whole team through the lead mule. The two wagons consist of the water wagon and a conestoga wagon which have been restored re-stored and are both over 75 years old. The group with the wagon consists of DeHaven, 5 other men and his 12-year old son. His wife and four daughters are patiently awaiting their return re-turn in Wessington, later this summer. Hobble Creek Riding Club has turned over their facilities at North Park to the group for the night. Ned Schole, president pres-ident of the riding club stated that anyone wishing to inspect the wagons or mules will be welcome at the rodeo grounds tonight and extended a special spec-ial invitation to the children. There is no charge and anyone desiring pictures may bring their cameras. After the group leaves Springivlle they will travel up Provo Canyon where they will stop for three days rest and to stay off the highway during the Memorial Day weekend. 20-MULE TEAM Richard Rife, Jean De-Haven, De-Haven, Roger Rife and Craig Conover, stand In front of perhaps the only 20-mule team left in the United States. The team, owned by Jean DeHaven, is on its way from Death Valley, California, to Wessington, Soutli Dakota, Da-kota, and will pass through Springville this afternoon about 2 p.m. The group plans to spend the night at the rodeo grounds and the public is invited to come and visit them. |
