I--" 1 i M ; ' I hi- f & Uft2j MEMORIAL DAY Too often holidays become lit- ' tie more -than days of fun and freedom, "long weekends" away from worlc, if we're lucky enough to have the holiday at weekend, There's a mass movement of people, peo-ple, and a grim toll kept of automobile auto-mobile accidents. The meaning ol the day tends to get lost in the shuffle. Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, was never a time for fin-works fin-works or celebration. It began in 1868, at a time when our nation was still torn by the grief and tragedy brought by the Civil War. In commemoration of the sacrifice made by Americans in that war, flowers were placed oi Civil War graves. This is the "decoration" of tfiii day . . . f I owe rs to sy m bolhi the beauty of life, and its bml hour. Today that practice of honoring hon-oring our war dead has comi generally to extend to all thou who gave their lives through t the wars of our history, on whatever what-ever battlefield. It makes Memorial Mem-orial Day one of our most signii leant national holidays, with special spec-ial importance to each of us.
