Show Document available for review ZION NATIONAL PARK - A draft document that addresses possible development of public transit system, improved overnight accommodations and other facilities designed to relieve congestion in Zion Nation Park in southern Utah is available for public review, the National Park Service said recently. Superintendent Harry Grafe said interested persons are invited to review the document and submit written comment no later than March 12, 1982. Copies of the document, known as a Draft Development Concept Plan for the Zion Canyon area of the park, are available upon request from the Superintendent, Zion National Park, Springdale, Utah 84767. It discusses a proposed voluntary public transportation system that would operate as a slow-moving scenic tour through the narrow canyon; improvement and-or replacement of existing lodging in the park; improvements to water and sewer systems; and trails and information servies. An earlier park plan develop in 1975 proposed to ease congestion and resource damage in the canyon by phasing out all overnight accommodations. The nearby community of Springdale, Utah, has insufficient lodging and food services to accommodate public needs, however, and the park concessioner's existing contract for those services was estended to the end of 1982 to allow time to conclude the present planning effort. Five alternative plans were offered in an Environmental assessment , that was published last year. The consensus plan emerged during a period of public review and comment. |
