Show Council agrees to pay standing city debt CEDAR CITY The Cedar City Council agreed to pay a standing City debt and discussed a number of other items at its City Council meeting Feb. 4. According to Mayor Robert Linford, in 1975 engineer Browning Piatt had a contract with the airport, and, upon completion of the construction, the general contractor was paid off, but Piatt didn't receive any payments for 15 months. "Browning's major concern was that he was unsuccessful in getting the City Council to act back then on his complaints, not the money owed him by the City." said Linford. When Piatt finally received payment, he wasn't paid interest for the 15-month period and the City Council decided to pay Piatt "one half of $1,918" for balance of payment According to Steve Piatt, representing his father, "he felt bad, in March of '77, because the complaint didn't come to the Council." "I just want to make sure the future administrations don't have this type of problem," added Mayor Linford. In another matter, Linford reported to the Council that one of the tenants in the City building might be moving out; and that, if the space is large enough, there is a possibility that the Cedar City Police Department would have a new home. According to Linford, "if the Chief feels the size is adequate, and it meets their needs, then the move would be made March 1." The Council authorized the City engineers to establish March 4, as the day the City will be accepting bids for construction of the Quitchapa water line.. According to City Manager Joe Melling, the money for the Qutichapa line is the last major portion of the $3.2 million water bond which was passed some time ago. The bid will actually consist of two parts, one for the pipe and one for the installation of the line. In other business The Council approved a beer license for Skaggs-Alpha Beta, which is scheduled to open Feb. 24. The Council called for a public hearing on the authorized uses for commercial zones CCl, GC1, HS1 and HS2. The public hearing on the zone analysis will be conducted March 4. The Council approved payment of its dues to the League of Cities and Towns, totaling $1,542, which is in the City's budget, according to Melling. The ' Council recommended that Mayor Linford be appointed to the Joint Highway Commission and to be recommended as a new board member on the League of Cities and Towns. The Council approved an agreement between the City and the Coal Creek Irrigation Company about the City maintaining a 33-inch pipe which is planned to be installed in a ditch near the airport which must be covered for an extension of the runway. Basically the agreement ; states that if the City puts in the pipeline it will accept maintenance of the line and keep it free from debris. The Council also approved an ordinance amendment bringing the City's drunk driving charges in line with what the state passed in the recent legislative session. |
