Show Cedar City hires new Painted Hills pro Evans hopes to receive support from local civic groups in starting programs to promote golf among young people. He would like to see various programs sponsored for kids in the area. Evans is married and is the father of five children. CEDAR CITY Anew golf pro, John Evans, has been hired for the Painted Hills Golf Course by the Cedar City Corporation, it was announced Saturday. Evans was selected to the position from a field of 23 candidates and is considered to be an excellent selection by local government officials and officers of the Painted Hills men's and ladies' golf associations. "We're really fortunate to have such a top-notch pro," exclaimed Tom Cardon, Cedar City councilman overseeing city recreation programs. Evans will be leaving his post as head-pro at the Cascade Fairways course in Orem, where he has worked for 10 years, to take over Painted Hills this spring. He will come to Cedar City with impressive golf credentials, including being a former All-WAC (Western Athletic Conference) golfer while at Brigham Young university. Evans has won the Provo Open twice; he has also won the Pepsi Open, City Parks Open, Treasure Valley Open, the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado and the PGA Chapter Tourney. Evans is considered by some to be among the top three playing pros in the state, and is considered by some to be number one. "I've been very fortunate to get this position down here," expressed Evans. "I like Cedar City and think I can do a good job. I have always wanted a job in a town this big." Evans originally planned on a career as a teacher, but he decided that golf was so enjoyable that he would pursue a career in the sport. He does feel his experiences with young people as he prepared to teach help him in his current work. "I think golf courses are a great place for people to spend their spare time," said Evans. "Through my working ' with kids, I feel I can help them develop into good kids." |
