Show Holyoak accepts new position; Record thanks for job well done made a point, and he always made it effectively. To avoid this editorial becoming too much like a eulogy, we quote Ninth Circuit Court Judge Christian Ronnow, from his introduction to Holyoak's book, "It's a Dirty Job, but Somebody Has To Do It." ... - , "Craig Holyoak has the rare gift of being able to put his pen-point on life's nerve endings without having any acidity on the pen-point. "He roves freely over the distressful human landscape letting some air out of the balloons of pomposity, of ineptness in high places, of 'politics as usual,' of narrow self interest, and of any other human foible currently in the news. "These drawings are the testament of a man in the high state of indignation over the threat that individual freedoms are becoming ever more subservient to technology and the dictums of the establishment. "But the drawings do not reflect any bitterness that this is so. "While there is substantial anger present there is more humor than morbidity, more joy than sorrow, indeed, finally more love than hate." That is the Holyoak secret. That is what we will miss. Today ends an era for the Record. 'Era' may, in reality, be too pompous a word, but after today the cartoons of Craig Holyoak will no longer appear in the Record; and those Iron County residents who have become used to his caricature and sharp wit, will definitely notice the change in our editorial page and miss the cartoons. Holyoak is leaving to accept work with the Deseret News in Salt Lake City. Although we, as many others, hate to see him go, we understand his reasons and wish him luck as he takes this chance to do the work he loves full time and to expand his talents and his horizons. Next week, in Holyoak's familiar spot, will appear the cartoons of Steve Rodet, known to Record readers because of a few of his cartoons that appeared in the paper last year. Rodet has expressed excitement at this chance but also some apprehension at filling Holyoak's shoes; yet, we at the Record are also excited. So to Craig we say thanks, from ourselves and from all of you who have enjoyed his humoifor over two years now. We say thanks to him for the good humored look he gave us of ourselves. Sometimes it hurt a little bit, sometimes everybody didn't agree. Sometimes people became angry. But he always |
