Show Utah Symphony slates concert at Zion Park Plans were initially begun bv Dixie College which operates the open air performing facility and it's former president, Ferron Losee, after the land was donated by the town of Springdale. "A statewide advisory board has been formed to assist with plans for future programming, funding and establishing on going policy. Board members are John Lancaster, Harold Chesler, Delmont Oswald, Ruth R. Draper, Kem C. Gardner, Robert Sears, Dr. C. Paul Andersen, Gary Mclntyre, J. R. Madsen, Sandra Wilkins and Mr. Dalton. The Utah Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington County, Southwest Series and Dixie College helped make the concert possible. The Utah Symphony will play for nature lovers as well as music enthusiasts en-thusiasts in Southern Utah on Wednesday, Wed-nesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. in the newly named Obert C. Tanner Ampitheatre. The spectacular ampitheatre is located near the entrance to Zion Park in the charming town of Springdale. But for a combined Bicentennial concert with the Utah Symphony and Tabernacle Choir which inaugurated the facility, only a few limited programs have been scheduled. Inadequate finances prevented completion of several essential accommodations. The ampitheatre seats 2,000 and is located in a picturesque bowl where concertgoers may look out at some of the structures of Zion Park and perhaps the rays of the setting sun hitting the tops of the dramatic rock structures. Robert Henderson, associate conductor, will conduct the concert. This summer marks the am-pitheatre's am-pitheatre's initial season schedule. Plans for the appealing concert spot are exciting and have been bolstered by a recent large endowment for programming by Obert C. Tanner. Mr. Tanner has underwritten much . of the original cost for the facility along with the State of Utah and the Bicentennial Commission. Nationally recognized performers are being contacted, and consideration is being given to several possibilities including in-cluding a "light-sound" show, a festival production and others. The large stage allows the flexibility of dance, orchestra, plays, opera or chorus. Arrangements for the ampitheatre are being directed by Dixie College President Rolfe Kerr and Robert O. Dalton, who is program director. |
