Show Former Parowan Basketball Great, Frank "Huzz" Ward dies in Wyoming Frank "Huzz" Ward age 76, died Feb. 14 in Sheridan, Wyoming. He was born Sept. 23, 1903 in Parowan to William G. and Emily Ward. . "Huzz" is well remem-berd remem-berd in athletic circles for his outstanding abilities as a basketball player. He distinguished himself as a member of the Parowan High School team that placed 2nd in the State when there were no 1A, 2A or 3A Ratings and also excelled in track and boxing. He went on to college in Cedar and was judged all Rocky Mountain prep school center both years he was there and was chosen Utah's best all around performer in the State Basketball tournament. tour-nament. Huzz married Mary Green and became a father before an athletic scholarship enabled him to go to Bozeman, Montana to play for the Montana State Golden Bobcats. Frank was named All American in 1929 and 1930 and was selected lor the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was all division all conference and all state basektball center. His Rocky Mountain conference scoring record of 239 points in a 14 game conference season including 97 field goals and 45 foul conversions was never broken. The Helms Athletic Foundation listed the 1929 Golden Bobcats as the greatest collegiate basketball team ever assembled. They tallied a 32-2 32-2 season that year. After graduating he played two years for a semi-pro semi-pro team in Calif, and then Huzz went on to enjoy years of successful coaching football basketball and track. In 1951 his wife Mary died and he retired to enjoy fishing and golfting in Red Lodge, Montana. When asked what he felt his greatest rewards were from his spectacular career he would say, it was the friendships he made with the coaches, referees, sport-swriters, sport-swriters, fans and teammates, team-mates, and many of them will remember him fondly. He is survived by two sons, Jim of Sheridan, Wyo. and Hal of Red Lodge, Mont. He is also survived by four brothers and two sisters. Silas, St. George, Thelma Gibson, Bountiful, Orland, Laramie, Wyo., Ortell Rassmussen, Parowan, Nelda Armstrong, Broken Arrow, Okla., Lewis, San Diego CA and Keith of Orem. Funeral services, were held Monday Feb. 18, 1980 at 1:00 p.m. in Red Lodge, ' Montana. Burial was in Red Lodge Cemetery. |
