Show Poll results favor MX project . Although only 55 responses were received from-the 450 questionnaries mailed to chamber members, nearly 66 percent favored the MX Missile project to some extent. With only 12 percent response to the questionnaire 18, or 33 percent indicated in-dicated that they strongly favored "the proposed location of the MX Missile site near Cedar City." Another 18, or 33 percent, somewhat favored the proposed program and one respondant had no opionion. A total of 14, or 25 percent expressed ex-pressed strong opposition to the proposal, another two somewhat opposed the location of the system near Cedar City and just two, representing four percent had other feelings. In general, those in favor of the MX system there was a strong indication that the system was needed for national defense, that the location of the system in the Utah and Nevada site would provide a positive economic benefit to the area and that it would provide much needed job oppportunties for the area. For those opposed to the MX system concerns were expressed that it would create a boom town in many areas of Utah and Nevada resulting in a deteriation of the existing life style. Other comments suggested that the system would likely be obsolete before it . ' was finished and still others had concerns for the stresses that would be placed on such areas such as water, grazing and mining activities. |
