Show I Large Crowds Attend All Three 1 Programs In St. George On July 5th i- Miss Maurine Whipple's Talk Was Well Received By Large Crowd !j Lucky were those who could I travel to the higher elevations for the Fourth of July, which was a celebrated on Monday the fifth; ' but for those who could not see mall mountain coolness for the day, a really rousing program was pro- 1 at vided, with large crowds attending n, all three phases of the day's events. At 10 a. m., crowds assembled H at the Wadsworth theatre, where the Martial band played at the entrance until the program com- " menced. Mrs. Vernon Cannon was responsible for the musical t numbers and Mrs. Howard -Judd, "r president of the Legion Auxiliary, " conducted the program. Mrs. C. C. Wallace was chaplain and offered the invocation and benediction. Program numbers included con- " gregational singing of the "Star- r (Continued on page six) July 4th Program (Continued from first page) Spangled Banner", followed by the ' Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Russell and Glenna Graff, children ' of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Graff, ' dressed in patriotic costumes sang "There's A Star-Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere", and Mrs. William E. Baker sang, "The Flag Without A Stain". Mrs. Cannon accompanied the numbers. Speaker of the day was Maurine Whipple, who thoroughly won her audience with her address on, "What People At Home Can Do 1 In Winning This War", the cheering cheer-ing lecture she gives on her tours. Mixing humorous incidents of past and present with sound suggestions sugges-tions for personal reaction, Miss Whipple offered numerous worthwhile worth-while suggestions to her audience and received their warm welcome. As a concluding number Vernon Worthen sang, "America", which was pantomimed by Miss Elaine Cannon in the costume of "Liberty". "Lib-erty". The spotlight added to the pleasing effect of this number. num-ber. Gather On Woodward Lawn Immediately following the pro-j gram the crowds assembled on the lawns north of the Woodward high school, where a lively program pro-gram of races, boxing, coin diving, lighted candle races and various other events afforded fun for old and young. After resting through the heat of the day, the crowds were ready at 7 p. m., for the bathing beauty contest at the Municipal pool. According Ac-cording to reports this was as good as anyone could ask for, al-1 though the judges were given real headaches to make the decisions. There was 43 entries in three groups. Decision was made to draw numbers which gave Mary Barton, little granddaughter grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. W. McAllister, first place; Patricia Lynn Empey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Empey, second; and Kathy Call, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anson B. Call, third place.
