Show Hews from Our People In the Armed Services IX Gene Judd In Alabama At Maxwell Field, Ala., to receive re-ceive nine weeks pilot training on four-engine Liberator bombers is Second Lieut. Gene Judd of Washington, Wash-ington, Lieut. Judd was hand-picked by Army Air Forces experts as having hav-ing those qualities needed to qualify him as commander of four-engined four-engined battle-craft, and his training train-ing will be complete and thorough, with additional A.A.F. training to follow. 13S aa C'amiw of SSgt. Ostensen In our story last week of SSgt. Jack Ostensen, son of Phillip Ostensen Os-tensen of this city ,who is reported re-ported "missing in action over France since Jan. 21st", we lacked information as to his having been located at Camp George White and Fort Lewis, Wash., with the U. S. Army for three years prior to the Pearl Harbor incident. Returning Re-turning to military duty he enlisted en-listed in the Army air corps and after completing his training, served 18 months in the South Pacific before being transferred to the European area. SB Pa IS Ralph Riding Graduates Mr. and Mrs. John H. Riding were advised by letter Wednesday Wednes-day of the graduation of their grandson, Ralph Riding, from the hospital corps school at Los Angeles, An-geles, Feb. 10th. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Riding, formerly of St. 'deorge and now of Ogden, and will be stationed for the present at the base hospital hos-pital in Long Beach. Pa Cpl. L. McArthur On Furlough Cpl. LaRaine McArthur is home for a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Val McArthur Mc-Arthur from his duties at the Prisoner of War camp in Ogden. LaRaine is X-ray technician at the station hospital and says he has plenty of work but enjoys it. K S ft S2c Holt Home On Leave Home for a short leave from U. ,S. Navy training is Louis Holt, S2c, who has made a rating rat-ing at Camp Farragut, playing on Co. 1106 basketball team. Seaman Sea-man Holt has only been in training train-ing six weeks but is listed by the Farragut paper as one of the chief scorers on their basketball team to date, saying he has shown real power in his playing. Besides his basketball, Seaman Holt says the U. S. Navy is okeh and he is having a great time. Social Honors A. Averett Alpine Averett, who is home on furlough from his training post in Oklahoma, was guest of honor at a family social last Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charges Andrus. The evening eve-ning was devoted to games, visiting vis-iting and refreshments. Mr.' Averett Av-erett is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Andrus. R Rl t3 Sgt. Brockbank Visits Here First Sgt. Nord Brockbank was home three days ,of last week from his training camp in Indio, Calif. Mrs. Brockbank, who is living with her parents in Holden, joined her husband in St. George remaining until Monday, as guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orlin Brockbank. Sgt. Brockbank returned re-turned to California Firday. R d S Transferred To Las Vegas Second Lieut. Neldon Jones arrived ar-rived in Toquerville Friday from Texas, leaving this week end for Las Vegas, where he will be an instructor at the air base. His wife and baby will accompany him to Las Vegas. Pa Tss Pfc. Terry Leaves for Oregon ' Pfc. and Mrs. Gordon Terry left Saturday for Camp Adair, Ore., after visiting several days in Toquerville with Mrs. Terry's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Dodge. While here they spent one day at the St. George Temple. Pa pa fsa SSgt. Fullerton Visits SSgt. Alex Fullerton was home last Saturday and Sunday from Camp Granite, Indio, Calif., to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Fullerton, who report he is looking fine and was happy to have even two days at home. Ps Pa F2c Brown In California Donald Brown, Fireman 2c in the U. S. Navy, who is now stationed sta-tioned at Shoemaker, Calif., is hoping through the News to keep contact with the boys he had boot training with at Camp Farragut, Far-ragut, including Dale Prisbrey, Denzil Lightner and Anthony Pendleton. Pen-dleton. He says there is more sushine at Shoemaker than at Farragut, and he likes the U. S. Navy. Pa Pa Pa Pfc. K. Church In So. Pacific Pfc. Karl Church writes home to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ver-non Church that he is still in the South Pacific and feeling fine. He says he looks forward to letters let-ters from home and for the Washington Wash-ington County News. Pa PS Pa Cpl. Kelsey Marries Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kelsey of New Harmony received word recently re-cently of the marriage of their son, Cpl. Merlin Kelsey to Miss Grace Wagner of Camden, N. J. The couple were married Jan. 22nd and spent a short honeymoon honey-moon in New York, before Cpl. Kelsey returned to Philadelphia, where he is in the U. S. Coast Guard service. Pfc. Hardy Returns to Post Home recently for a just a few days was Pfc. Augustus Hardy, who came in from Maxwell Field, Ala., where he has been training for several weeks. Mrs. Hardy and their baby joined him here for a short visit, and returned with him as far as Salt Lake City on his return trip. Pa Pa Pa 2nd Lt. W. Whitehead VLsits In St. George Monday over Wednesday at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Vivien Woodbury, Second Sec-ond Lieut. William R. (Billie) Whitehead reports he has enjoyed visiting relatives and friends and Dixie college once again. In the U. S. Army air training for the past year, Lieut. Whitehead White-head spent the first three months at Lincoln, Neb., going from there to Santa Ana, thence to King City, and on to LaMar, Calif., and completing his requirements for graduation at Douglas, Ariz., where he was given his wings Feb. 8th. He visited in Salt Lake City last week with his father, Wm. A. Whitehead and sister, Melissa, and will report in Douglas Doug-las for his next assignment. Pa Pa Pa 2nd Lt. Hirschi Visits Here The News office had a short visit last Friday form Second Lieut. Melville Hirschi, who had arrived from Williams Field, Ariz., where Lieut. Hirschi graduated Feb. 8th from Army air corps training. Mrs. Hirschi and her husband visited in Toquerville, Rockville, Hurricane and Cedar City over the week end. Their small son has been with his grandmother, Mrs. Eva Higbee, while his mother was at Williams Field. |
