Uintah's RickMorfon radECejtfhy Olivers r f re Eiing and ejueem in T32) nraeveir Uintah's Rick Morton, Kathy Chivers and Jerry Allred have one thing in common and that is the 100 meter dash. The only difference is that Morton and Chivers competed in one 100 meter dash at the 3-A State Track and Field Meet and Allred ran a total of 56 100 meter dashes. Morton and Chivers captured 100 meter dash titles and Allred was one of only three runners in the state of Utah who competed in the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter runs at the state meet. Morton captured the 100 meter title due to a first place time of 11.23 and James Turner of Orem placed second at 11.27. "I had a pretty good start, but Turner beat me out of the blocks by two feet. He was ahead for 30 meters and I turned on the speed and caught him at the 50 to 60 meter mark. I beat him by a foot or two just barely. I passed him at the 70 meter mark," stated Morton. When asked to comment on his feeling about being a state champ in the 100 meter dash, Morton remarked, "Not a whole lot goes through your mind in the 100. Everything is going through your mind real fast. I was 2nd by an inch last year in the 100 and I was awful happy to place first this year." Morton was also a member along with Blake Ewell, Greg Limb and Troy Liebhardt on the 400 meter relay team, which placed second in the state meet with a a time of 43.74. "We had to fill in with Ewell when Mike Johnson was hurt in a motorcycle accident. We had run only one race with Ewell. We didn't have much time to practice, but we turned it on and placed second," said Morton. Uintah's other state 100 meter champion, Chivers, recorded a time of 13.0 in the 3-A state meet. Connie Kelly of West placed second at 13.05. "It was pretty close. I did a really good job of getting out of the blocks. It was one of my better starts. I just kept ahead of Kelly the whole race. I could see her out of the corner of my eye. I felt great when I hit the tape as the winner," said Chivers. Chivers placed second in the 200 meters at 26.44 and Kelly nabbed first place at 26.35. "She was ahead all the way. I was in front of her at the beginning due to a staggered start. I had a bad start. I was too nervous and there was too much pressure." Andreason of Murray, Parker of Viewmont and Allred of Uintah were the only tracksters to compete in all the long distance events, 3200, 1600 and 800 meters at the 3-A state meet. Allred placed fourth in the 1600 meters at 4:26 and captured fifth place in the 800 at 1:59. Allred also placed seventh in the . 32O0at9:43. Allredcompetedin the 1600 . and 3200 three years at the state meet and took part in the 800 meters as a senior. "It (three events) was too many. It cost me the state title in the 800. My region time of 1:57.63 was faster than the winning time at the state meet. I was just too tired," stated Allred. Allred tied the mark at the Brigham Young University Invitational and broke it at the region meet with a time of 1:57.63. "I just went hard from the gun to the tape and got both quarters under 60' seconds. I ran the first lap in 58 seconds and posted a time of 59 seconds in the second lap," remarked Allred. "I was tired because I had run the mile an hour before and I knew I couldn't out-kick them so I had to get the lead from the start." Allred added, "I was sick the day before the BYU meet and I thought I wouldn't be able to run. I got feeling better and I ran anyway. I was sitting in second place for the first lap and one guy passed me and I placed third. I wasn't real sharp, but I was able to tie the school record with the time." Allred set a school record this year in the 800, but Morton pocketed two records, a state record and a school record in the 100 meter dash. Morton tied the state record in the 100 meter dash record owned by Brian Hazelgren of Murray at 10.78 in the Mt. Timpanogas Meet. Morton's time of 10.78 is a new Uintah High School record.
