Show CAR CARE- O c Tips For More Safety. R Economy, Convenience L Cold Weather Car Care When the wind whips up and the temperature drops you should take care to keep your car running as carefree care-free and gas-efficiently as it does in the summer. When you start your car in cold weather, don't pump the pedal to warm the engine. That wastes gas. Let the engine warm up gradually. Never let your car warm up in a closed garage because carbon monoxide poisoning may accidently result. Low temperatures make motor oil thicken, and free-flowing free-flowing oil is necessary for your car to start easily and run well. Be sure the oil in your engine is the proper grade for your climate. Manufacturers print "W" numbers on the oil can 6W. 10W, 15W and 20W. to help you choose the right grade. The lower the number the thinner the oil for low temperature use. 20W flows at freeline, 10W works down to 05 and 5W below that. Special gasoline saving oils like Kendall Superb 100 10W-40 and 5W-30 perform in cold weather and still save you gas. When you put on snow tires be sure to check your car's manual for the proper air pressure. The wrong air pressure may waste gasoline and reduce tire traction. |
