Utah State led by as many as nine points in the first half before settling for a 38-38 intermission tie. USU raced to the advantage ad-vantage in the second half and was faced with the job of holding the home team at bay. USU canned 12 out of 13 free throws from the 3:4R mark to :28 to lock up the victory. BYU made a gallant bid in the closing minute. Freshman guards Scott Sinek and Bob Capener closed a 75-66 75-66 Aggie lead to 75-72 in less than 29 seconds. USU's Michael Mc-Cullough Mc-Cullough popped in two free throws to derail the BYU express. Before him, Mc-Cullough Mc-Cullough had been preceded by other clutch free throw shooters in Lance Washington at 4-4, Haakon Austerf jord, 2-3 and Greg Anderson, 2-2. Leo Cunningham and McCullough were the top scorers for the Aggies at 22 points and Austcfjord put in 14 points. Washington scored 11 and Anderson, a former BYU Cougar put in eight. Fred Robert scored 23 points for BYU and Steve Trumb put in 18 points. Sinek scored 12 and Greg Ballif added eight points. BYU managed only 37 percent from the floor. HASKF.THAI.L TRADES Cleveland Cuvaliers traded Mike Mitchell, forward, and Roger I'hegley, guard, to the San Antonio Spurs for Reggie Johnson, forward, and Ron Brewer, guard.
