Wall pinned Chambers of Wasatch in the first round ' in 34 seconds, decisioned Spencer, Steamboat Springs, 8-2 and blanked Miles of Olympus in the championship i. match 4-0. Rick Massey, 112, who was a member i of the Ute junior varsity, pinned l Ixonard Weking, Skyline, in 1:44 of the second round in the championship match. Scott Williams, Montrose, won the 155 pound title when he blanked Leo Mack, Steamboat, 2-0. Steve Foster, Montrose, 185, captured first place due to a 6-0 win over Roger Tree, Wasatch, and Ryan Booth, Olympus, won the heavyweight championship match when he pinned John Sutrina, Grand Junction, in 1 :36 of the first round. Montrose pocketed its second Tournament of Champions first place crown in a row when they downed second place Pocatello 103' 2 to 93. Uintah placed third at 78 points. Jim Tripp and Rick Massey nabbed first place crowns for the Utes in the 1975 tournament. Massey decisioned Lugero of Montrose and Tripp decisioned Wilson of Springville. Montrose's Gallegos at 112 pounds was named as the most outstanding wrestler and heavyweight Franklin King of Pocatello pinned all of his opponents and dropped one opponent in 14 seconds. A half point killed Montrose's quest for a third straight Vernal Tournament of Champions first place crown and enabled the Uintah Utes to acquire its first tournament title in 1976 as they edged Montrose 95' 2 to 95. The Utes were in second place with an 81' 2 total and Montrose was in first place at 86' 2 going into the consolation finals. The Utes grabbed a narrow lead over Montrose due to third place wins by Robert Bia, 112; Rick Massey, 138 and Jeff Weeks, heavyweight. Bia blanked Paul Jarman, Orem, 7-0 and Massey downed Wally Browning, Pocatello, 3-1. Weeks pinned John Folson, Olympus. Massey lost out on his bid for a third Vernal Tournament of Champions crown, but his third place win delivered valuable points to the Utes. Montrose lost two matches in the consolation finals. Montrose's title chances were hurt severly when 98 pounder Wayne Espanoza was injured and had to default the title match to Grand Junction Junc-tion Central's Greg Williams. Uintah's Jim Tripp nabbed his second straight Vernal Tournament of Champions crown win a 3-0 win over Grand Junction Central's Arnold Gurule in overtime 3-0. Pleasant Grove's Craig Walker nipped Uintah's 119 pounder F.ugene Woody in overtime 1-0 and Uintah's Scott Kuppe won the 126 pound crown when he downed Al Vuksinick 6 3. Montrose's Rod Dickerson, 112, was downed by Wayne South, Grand Junction Central 18 6 and Kevin Brocks, Montrose, lost to Pocatello's Ken Webb 5 3. Montrose's Jack Garrison won the 138 pound title when he pinned Ron Doty in the third round. Garrison was selected as the most outstanding wrestler. The Mont rose crew nabbed its second championship when Hon Vigil ripped 145 pounfler from Pleasant Grove Russ Moore 22 11. Uintah's Wendell Francis was decisioned by Randy Heard 4 to 3 in the 167 pound class. Uintah had a half point lend over Montrose with one match to go in (he meet, but the Utes were out of wrestlers 1 and a win by Clayton James of Montrose Mon-trose over Kelly Kirwin of Orem in the heavyweight match would give the crown to the Colorado crew. Kirwin made the Uintah fans happy when he pinned James with one second left in the first round and the Utes had their first Vernal Tournament of Champions trophy locked up. Once the Utes gained their first taste of Vernal Tournament of Champions crown they became hungry for more and they acquired titles in 1977. 1978 and 19R0. Uintah downed Meeker 140 to 113' 2 for the title in 1977 and edged Green River. 155-140' ? in 1978 and nipped Rock Springs, 135 1 34, r.'o.0. Rock Springs won the 1979 title when they thumped Uintah 132' 2 to 109 and Green River won the 1981 championship cham-pionship when they toppled Box Elder 130' 2 to 121' Uintah placed third at 120 points. Nabbing first place crowns for the Utes in 1977 were Kevin Huber, 112. Scott Ruppe, 132; Junior Tripp, 138 and Jeff Weeks, hea vyweight. Huber edged Gary Takagi. Hillcrest 5 4 in tlie title match. Huber was named as the most outstanding wrestler in the lower weights. Ruppe pinned Rill Story of Meeker in the first round and blasted David Moore, Orem, 112 in the second round. Ruppe won the crown when Craig Walker, Pleasant Grove, was forced to default due to an injury Tripp nabbed first place when he blasted Tracy Tate of Meeker, 12-5 and Weeks placed first when he decisioned Clyde Huntsman, Pleasant Grove, 10-3. Jerry Murray, 185 and Rick Fladelnnd, 125, placed second. Tripp and Weeks joined the second title in a row club with first place victories in the 1978 Vernal Tournament Tour-nament of Champions. Frank Jaramillo, 98, also placed first for the Utes when he nipped Mark Strabein of Montrose, 6-4. Jaramillo was named as the most outstanding wrestler in the light weights Tripp, 145. nabbed first when he edged Matt Haynes of Montrose Mon-trose 3 2 Haynes had a 2-0 lead after two rounds, but Tripp tied up the contest at 2 2 with 38 seconds left in the match when Haynes was called for stalling. Tripp won the contest by gaining an escape witn 22 second left Weeks placed first in the heavyweight class when lie pinned Bryon Vance of lYovo with 1:44 left in the second round Uintah's Josh Reynolds, 98; Morgan Woodhouse. 132 and Wayne Huber, 185, nabbed first place crowns in the 1979 Vernal Tournament of Champions. Reynolds, a sophomore, blanked Blake Reeslcy 30 for first place and Woodhouse acquired first place when he edged Ron Stassinos. Rock Springs. 3 2 Wrxxlhousc gained a takedown in the first round. Ixit Stassinos tied the match with a reversal in the second round Woodhouse gained an escape in the third round and won by one point Huber placed first when he blanked John Watkins of Olympus 60 Scott Murray, 112. placed second Throe Uintah Utes pocketed first place honors in the 1980 Vernal Tournament Tour-nament of Champions, but only two of the titles counted. Uintah junior varsity tussler Brett Brown downed Uintah's varsity starter in the 98 pound class. Josh Reynolds, 7-2 and thus the Ute varsity didn't receive any points. Ron Horrocks, Uintah, won the 105 pound title when he edged Gary Robbins of Skyline 8 7. Matt Hacking". Uintah, 138, downed Ron Stassinos of Rock Springs due to a criteria decisions. Stassinos nablx-d an escape in the first round for a 10 lead, but Hacking pocketed an escape of his own to tie up the match at 11 with 19 seconds left. Both wrestlers were shutout in the tliree overtime periods and Hacking was named as the winner due to a criteria division. . "-4 i A NUMBER of masked matmen have competed in the past eight' Vernal Tournament of Champions from time to time and one j such tussler, Keith Campbell, battles an opponent. ; i Uintah sophomore Randy Smuin appeared to have the 145 pound title locked up as he had a two-point lead w ith ten seconds left, but Niki McCulley gained a takedown and a three-point near fall in the final seconds for an 11-8 win. Brian Ashmore, 155, placed first w hen he downed Uintah's Kay Smuin 9-2. 9-2. The Utes had only a 135-130 lead over Rock Springs going into the final match between Kenny Cobbs, Uintah, and Fred Bath, Rock Springs. A pin by Bath w ould deliver the title to Rock Springs, but Cobbs kept his shoulder blades off the mat and although he le to Bath 5-3, he was still a winnc. s ne helped the Utes win the crown by one point, 135-134. 135-134. Brett Brown joined the two-time club when he edged Jim Smoot of Box Elder 4-2 in the 98 pound class. Smoot grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first round due to a takedown, but Brown gained a reversal in the first round to tie up the contest at 2 2 Brown gained a reversal in the second round to win the match by two points. Pat Jenkins, 145. joined the Ute sophomore championship club when he downed Mike Hamel of Green River due to a criteria decision. Hamel jur ped out to a 2-0 lead, but Jenkins dropped Hamel for a takedown to tie ' the contest at 2-2 and forced it overtime. Hamel acquired a neutral a the second round of overtime, but' Jenkins nabbed a takedown for a 2-1 S lead. Jenkins was called for sUIgi and the match ended in a 2-2 tie la--tah's Reynolds, 119; Smuin, 155 David Gentry, 112, placed sectrj Reynolds was pinned in overtime br !
