GIANTS THUMP EAGLES The New York Giants, making their first post season appearance in 18 years, knocked off the 1980-81 NFC champions, Philadelphia, Sunday 27-21 27-21 behind three touchdown touch-down passes by Scott Brunner. New York advanced into the division playoffs due to the win and will battle San Francisco next Sunday. New York's last visit to the playoffs was in 1963. Philadelphia was favored by seven points going into the game and they made things easy for New York in the opening period as return specialist Wally Henry lost two of the Eagles' five first half fumbles to help the Giants to a 20-0 lead. Henry fumbled a punt when he was intimidated by charging rookie All-Pro All-Pro linebacker Lawrence Taylor and Beasley Reece recovered for the Giants at the Eagle 25. Fullback Rob Carpenter, who rushed for 77 of his 161 yards in the opening half, carried four straight times to set up 3rd and goal from the line. Brunner then hit wide open rookie Leon Bright, who circled out of the backfield down the right sideline for the score 4:42 into the game.
