Show 30 YEARS AGO Jan. 3, 1952 The icy arms of winter locked in a tight grip arouna the Uintah Basin early this week, stranding motorists and isolating farms for three days with heavy snowfall. The thermometer took a downward plunge after the storm, sending Vernal temperatures to 36 degrees below zero. The completion of Highway 14 last month has given Colorado residents a good outlet to the west that will bring a heavier flow of traffic through Vernal. The project was completed when the road from the Rangely Oilfield on Highway High-way 40, which began construction last spring, was finished Dec. 15. No loss of either sheep or cattle has been reported as a result of the recent storm. Snow depth on the winter range is from one to two feet between the Green River and the Colorado border, but only six inches fell on the southern end of the range, near Watson. Membership of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce reached the all-time high of 231 during the past year, accounced the Chamber's secretary B. Frank Ward. |
