Vernal Junior High improved its recur d to 6 0 i!ue !u a 69 to 48 win over Roosevelt in Vernal, Dec. 22. eo"(rD(oD destroys seoHtf ft odd lhp eimsaOTtfeir The Vernal Junior High Panthers had reason to feel depressed as Roosevelt had a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the 9th grade crew from Vernal made the Rough Riders feel depressed as they applied the press and nabbed steals for easy baskets, which helped Vernal break open a close game for a 69 to 48 victory over Roosevelt Dec. 22 in Vernal. The win improves Vernal's record to 6 wins and 0 losses. Vernal has toppled Notre Dame, Craig, West, Helper, Canyon View and Roosevelt. Roosevelt zipped out to a 14-13 lead in the first quarter on seven points by Russell Nielsen, three by Jeff Crinklaw and two each by Jeff Madsen and Chris Lloyd. Jason Taylor popped in five points in the first quarter for the Panthers and Tony Lewis, Paul Viles pumped in four counters each. Vernal awoke from their deep sleep in the first quarter with a 21 point eruption in the second quarter for a 34 to 26 point advantage. Roosevelt scored 12 points in the quarter. Viles violated the Roosevelt defense with four field goals for eight points in the second quarter and Taylor pumped in four counters. David Gurr popped in three counters and Blake Horrocks, Rodney Hilkey added two points. Vernal held Nielsen to two points, but Lloyd pumped in three field goals for six counters. "It was a pretty evenly played ball game at first and was close midway in the second quarter. We got a couple of breaks as we stole the bajl twice on the press and we were up by eight at the half," stated Vernal Junior High basketball coach Craig Monsen. Lewis put in two outside shots and Kenny Rasmussen and Taylor pumped in field goals. Lewis set up one of his two-pointers by stealing the ball from a Roosevelt eager. The Rough Riders acquired their first field goal in the second half at the 4:49 mark of the third quarter. However, Vernal scored four more points for a 46-28 46-28 lead on two pointers by Rasmussen and Lewis. Rasmussen's field goal was set up due to an excellent pass by Taylor. Roosevelt scored two more field goals, but Vernal's Viles also struck for paydirt with two field goals for a 50-34 Panther advantage. Rasmussen put in a two-point shot for the Panthers, bu.t Viles wasn't finished scoring points yet as he ripped in a shot with two seconds left to make the score at the end of the third quarter Vernal 54 and Roosevelt 36. Lewis. Rasmussen and Viles were the main point producers in the third quarter for the Panthers with three field goals each. Vernal outscored Roosevelt 7 to 2 early in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game by the score of 69-48. Horrocks poured in three field goals in the final quarter for the Panthers and Rasmussen pumped in four counters. Viles put in three points and Tim Haslem struck for one field goal. The Panthers had six players put in points in the second half, but Roosevelt had only three players score their 22 points in the second half. Sixteen of the 22 Roosevelt points in the second half were scored by Nielsen. Nielsen scored four field goals each in the third and fourth quarters. "Our fastbreak started working pretty good in the second half. We got a few steals and we connected on a number of outside shots. Roosevelt had trouble with our press all day," said Monsen. Viles was Vernal's top scorer in the game with 21 points. Viles connected on ten field goals and hit 1 out of 5 free throws. Vernal had three other cagers in double figures. Lewis fired in 12 counters and Taylor popped in 11 points. Rasmussen tossed in ten points. Also scoring points for Vernal were Horrocks, 8; Gurr, 3; Hilkey, 2 and Haslem, 2. Vernal tossed in 30 field goals and h it 7 outof 13 free throws. "Our players are really looking good and are starting to put things together. We are playing well. We looked excellent ex-cellent on defense, passing, shooting, one press and everywhere else. Kverything is starting to click. We have a good bunch of players. Viles was t' our top scorer at 21 points. He posts up tough and guards are getting the ball into him for close in shots. Sometimes he was able to wheel and deal on them and get the basket," said Monsen. "We had a pretty good balanced scoring attack. Lewis tossed in 12 points. Tony Lewis is as fine a shooter as I have ever had. He has a good outside shot. Tim Haslem hit only one shot, but he played excellent on defense and had five steals all by himself. He runs our press and defense. He is really a hustler. Taylor put in 11 points and Rasmussen scored ten points. Taylor played a good ball game. He broke the press several times and had seven assists. He is a super player and a good shooter. Rasmussen is really coming on now. His coordination coor-dination is starting to catch up with him. He has a real soft shot and is tough on the boards. Rasmussen and Viles owned the boards during the game with Roosevelt." The number one scorer in the game was Roosevelt's Nielsen at 25 points. Nielsen pumped in ten field goals and hit 5 out of 11 free throws. Nielsen put in 16 points in the second half. Lloyd fired in eight points and Madsen popped in six points. Kevin Hirchi pumped iu four counters and Crinklaw tossed in two points. Brett Wymer scored two counters. Roosevelt fired in 20 field goals and hit 8 out of 17 charity tosses. "I was really worried about Roosevelt. They are a super ball club. Nielsen is an outstanding ball player and they have several other good players. They had trouble matching up against our height," stated Monsen. Vernal will battle the Longhorns in Altamont Jan. 7 and will host Craig Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. The Panthers will take on the Rough Riders in Roosevelt Jan. 13 and will host the Vernal Frosh Invitational In-vitational Jan. 22-23. Vernal will take on the Vikings at West Junior High Jan. 28 and will take on Notre Dame and Mont Harmon in Price Feb. 2. The Panthers will host Altamont Feb. 11 and will compete in the Craig Tournament Tour-nament Feb. 12-13. Vernal will compete in the Basin Tournament in Roosevelt Feb. 23. m.
