However, the Utes surprised a lot of people as they scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead, and Cyprus found out that there was a ball game going on. The Utes weren't going to roll over and die at the feet of the mighty Cyprus Pirates. The Pirates' Gilbert Vasquez scored three touchdowns, one in the second quarter and two in the third quarter, to deliver a 21 to 13 come-from-behind victory to the Cyprus crew. "Cyprus was surprised because we turned out to be a better team than they thought we would be," stated Uintah's Robert Poole. The Utes' first touchdown was set up when the ball flew over the punter's head and Robert Poole recovered the ball on the one yard line in the first quarter. "I got the ball and dove over the top of the pile and into the end zone for the touchdown. The play was a dive. Judge Memorial better look out because we are coming on. We (Uintah) (Uin-tah) played a good game against Cyprus, but we have to play a little better," stated Dave Emery. The Utes will host the Judge Memorial Bulldogs, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Rick Morton scored a touchdown on a 31 yard run late in the first quarter to give the Utes a 13-0 lead. "Good blocking enabled me to score the touchdown. touch-down. I didn't have to do anything but run because of the good blocking," remarked Morton. The Utes put pressure on quarterback, quar-terback, Dennis Rupp, who is the brother of former Uintah High School head basketball coach, Kerry Rupp, and Gilbert Vasquez all night. Defensive ends, Robert Schultz, Randy Smuin; nose guard, Brent Hales; and tackles, Robert Poole and Lonnie Williams bugged Rupp throughout the game. Schultz was the biggest pain for Rupp as the Uintah defensive end sacked the Cyprus quarterback five times. "I just pushed a couple of guys around to get to the quarterback and then I had to worry about getting him (the quarterback)," said Schultz. Last year Schultz didn't play football as a sophomore. Uintah played well on defense, but tackling lapses and some long bombs enabled Cyprus to score three touch downs. Vasquez scored two touchdowns on long runs and missed tackles allowed him to advance to the end zone. "It was a good team effort. Cyprus was an excellent football team. We were two tackles away from beating them," remarked Kurt Case of Uintah. Randy Smuin turned in an outstanding out-standing punting game. Smuin had a 55 yard punt in the game. "I just got lucky on the kick. I had good protection on my kicks. It hurt us (Uintah) when we lost two of our starting linemen, Dave Hardy and Brent Hales, in the second half on injuries," said Smuin. When asked to comment on the Utes' loss to Cyprus, Uintah coach, Curg Belcher remarked, "It hurts to lose a close one like that because our kids played their hearts out and I would have liked to see them win it. We really worked hard and we are going to get Judge Memorial." said Belcher. "Even though we lost the contest, our players still turned in outstanding performances in the game. We ran and passed well against Cyprus and our defensive team looked good. Our defensive line played a super game," remarked Belcher. |
