Show What's right with duration? PART I By Dr. Wayne Reid, Supt. The President's Commission on School Finance in a report titled Schools, Money and People said: "For millions of children, American education both public and nonpublic non-public is not working as it was intended in-tended to work. Having stated that, this Commission hastens to point out that for many millions of others, the educational system has worked remarkably well. Despite the manifold problems which today beset our society. It is clear that our phenomenal progress as a nation is due largely to the success of our schools. This country has reached unparalleled heights in its economic and social development-due, development-due, in good part, to our educational system. Our public and nonpublic schools have served the majority of Americans well and are continuing to do so." This country has attempted what no other country has yet tackled educational opportunity for all the children of all the people; this country has not failed, but has succeeded in accomplishing what no other country has accomplished giving access to education to virtually all its people. Horace Mann said, "A human being is not, in any proper sense, a human being until he is educated." That the American people have the capacity to criticize is indicative of the success of the public schools. The ability of the public to criticize and to alter its institutions is among the precious products of our schools and should be one of the priceless conditions in our society. An intelligent and educated citizenry is essential to responsible government. Without the education of our people, the social conscience and the aspirations of so many to become educated, our country could not possibly have progressed to its present position of world leadership. An anonymous poem says it best: The best should teach The next may preach Though some must heal the sick; If I could say To each his way, This order I would pick. All else is naught Unless it's taught With 'wisdom, skill and power; The world awaits The opening gates Of teachers by the hour. Uintah School District cares! We expect the best, but we care greatly about all those beautiful young people we serve. Why not tell that teacher that you appreciate his or her efforts? Why not give a warm hand-shake and "thank you" to that bus driver or cookf Have you seen the condition of our buildings? Iet that custodian know? There is much right with education, education Uintah style! Just by gazing upon the forest of education, don't forget to see your own beautiful trees in the education system. |
