Show Times Garners Major Awards Sunday At Utah Press Assn. Convention The annual convention of the Utah Press Association As-sociation was held in Salt Lake City Feb. 9-11 9-11 with publishers and staff from the state's 51 weekly newspapers represented. The Times-Independent, with full staff in attendance, received a number of top awards in the organization's Better Bet-ter Newspaper Contest, and , on a total-points-earned basis, received thi;-d place in General Excellence in its category. cate-gory. The Times, a group 2 or medium size newspaper news-paper was awarded first place for Best Front Page, plus the coveted Harrison R. Merrill Award given annually by Brigham Young University; Univer-sity; first place for Best Editorial; second place for Best Editor's Column; Col-umn; and second place for the Best Advertising Advertis-ing Campaign. The convention was opened by an evening address by Gov. Calvin L. Rampton, who emphasized em-phasized his support of current legislation that would protect news sources. The Sunday activities were crowned by the award of the annual Master Editor and Publisher Pub-lisher award to James N. Cornwell. Murray, Utah publisher.
