Show Christmas Tree Cutting Allowed on BLM Areas Selecting and cutting your own Christmas tree will again be possible for many Utahns on lands administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management. According to Paul L. Howard, How-ard, BLM Utah state director, the Bureau has designated several areas in the state where families may cut their own trees, but none of the areas are near the populated Wasatch Front. Only pinon and juniper trees will be available from BLM. Permits cost $1 per tree and each family will be limited to only one tree. Permits and maps of designated tree cutting areas may be obtained by visiting (during regular office hours) or writing to the BLM office responsible for administering the specific cutting area. Mr. Howard pointed out that after a storm, access to many of the cutting areas may require four-wheel drive vehicles. vehi-cles. In addition, cutters often may have to hike considerable distances from any road to find a tree, so adequate clothing and equipment is necessary. Many of this year's areas are traditional tree cutting areas and good Christmas trees are increasingly harder to find, he added. Firewood permits are also available at the BLM offices offering tree permits thus making a dual purpose outing possible for families. Permits for the Porcupine Rim cutting area can be obtained at the BLM area office, located in the Federal Building, 446 So. Main. |
