Show Community Rallying to Support Family Whose Home Was Lost to Fire Moabites are rallying in support of the Larry Key family, after fire destroyed their home and all their belongings in the early morning hours of Nov. 8. Sharon Key awoke sometime after 1 a.m. and heard a popping and cracking sound. She and Larry were only able to get themselves and their three children, " Leslie, 12, Kelly 9, and Larry, 4, out of the burning structure. Fire Chief Troy Black said the alarm on the fire came in at 1:45 a.m. and that the fire was a major one when the family was awakened. It had been burning long enough that it was burning out the roof before the department was alerted, he said. The Keys had just completed an addition to their mobile home at 393 Wingate and moved into it recently. Although the basement portion of the addition was relatively undamaged, flames destroyed the original structure, which was a mobile home and the ground floor of the addition. The fire started in the kitchen and was possibly caused by a short in an electrical wire. A preliminary estimate of losses totals about $45,000, including hearing aids belonging to Kelly and Larry Key. The family is currently staying with Larry's brother and family, the Corky Keys, 277 E. 1st North. Anyone with clothing or household goods they can spare and would like to share can take them there. In addition, Rachel McDonald, home economics teacher at the Middle Schoool, has volunteered to collect goods for the family from among the students.
