Show I BLM chooses panel to j help set procedures for j ! land wilderness study I The Bureau of Land Manage-j Manage-j merit's draft procedures for conducting con-ducting a wilderness study of the public lands as mandated by i Congress will be critiqued by a j special Utah panel. I The 11-member panel will meet I May 19 at 8 a.m. in the BLM Utah J State Office conference room, 1408 University Club Building, 136 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, j Utah. Paul L. Howard, BLM state j director for Utah, said the meeting j will be open to the public but the I discussion will be primarily among J panel members. Public meetings j previously have been conducted in j Salt Lake City, Moab and Cedar City. j Members of the panel include j Paul Rattle, Moab, representing I mineral interests; Dick Carter, Salt I Lake City, Wilderness Society; j Richard Leigh, Cedar City, Stockman; Stock-man; Dorde Woodruff, Salt Lake City, off-road-vehicle users; Calvin Black, Blanding, county officials; j Paul Parker, Salt Lake City, state I government; Steve Wiseman, Salt Lake City, sportsman; Prof. Richard Rich-ard Toth, Logan, landscape archi- tects and environmental planners; I Roberta Fullerton, Aurora, Colo., j Outdoors Unlimited; D. B. Gale j Dick and Jim Catlin, Salt Lake City, i environmentalists. ! The public has been invited to J send their comments on the Bureau's draft wilderness proee- i dures to the Bureau of Land j Management Director (370), Wash- I ington, D.C. 20240. Recommend;.- I tions and comments of the panel ' also will be submitted to the BLM j national director for development of final procedures. i Once the wilderness inventory procedures are developed, bureau I personnel will launch an inventory ! process with extensive public ' participation. Areas identified dur- J ing this inventory as not having j wilderness characteristics will be j dropped from further study and j returned to multiple use manage- ment. Those found to have I potential for wilderness designation I will become study areas and will be recommended to Congress as either unsuitable or suitable for inclusion in the nation's wilderness system. j Final wilderness determination will 1 be made by the Congress, Mr. i Howard noted. i During the study period, he emphasized, most multiple use activities can continue on the public i land as long as the activities do not impact any wilderness potential of I the area.
