Show Record striper landed at Lake Powell For Bill Peck of Boulder, Bould-er, Lake Powell crappie fishing provides unexpected unexpect-ed surprises. On April, 23 just before heading in for lunch, Peck landed a state record nine-and-a-half pound striped bass. The previous record was seven and a half pounds. The fish was caught on a crappie jig near Lake Canyon on four-pound test line. Despite Peck's impressive impres-sive catch, Dale Hep-worth, Hep-worth, Southern Region fisheries manager with the Division of Wildlife Resources, predicts the record probably won't last long. Hepworth said that fingerling stripers have been stocked each July since 1974. Fish stocked that year average seven and a half to eight pounds. Next year, they may reach 12 pounds. "In f act , ". continued Hepworth, "it is safe to say that we'll be catching twenty-pounders, at least, in the future." But Peck won't forget the catch, even if the record is broken next week. The bass stripped 1,000 feet of line off his reel and took twenty minutes to land-some crappie. |
