Show Local School District Slated -As Teacher Training Test Site The Grand county School District has been designated as one of four institutions to participate in an operational field test of a new teacher-training teacher-training course created by the Far West Laboratory for Educational Ed-ucational Research and Development De-velopment in Berkeley. Calif., it was announced Wednesday by Superintendent C. Robert Sundwall. The course will begin this Friday at the Southeast Elementary Ele-mentary School with four teachers tea-chers participating. They are Mrs. Jnsabel Davidson, Mrs. Helen Madsen, Mrs. Josephine Jose-phine Nelson, and Bill Foote. Mr. Russ Donoehue, Director of Educational Television, will act as supervisor. Mr. Don-oshue Don-oshue attended a two day workshop in Berkeley last week at the Hotel Claremont. The new teaching technique named "Mini Course I" by its developers, uses videotape, video-tape, films, textbooks, . and evaluation forms to show the elementary teacher how to improve classroom questioning question-ing skills that will help children chil-dren have better opportunities opportunit-ies to learn. "Mini Course I" is an active ac-tive teacher training course where each participating teacher tea-cher observes from film the teacher behavioral change which is to be desired. Through the facilities. of the' school district television equipment, eq-uipment, a teacher will record re-cord instances of her own teaching to determine if the change is being accomplished. accomplish-ed. Teachers will do this by working with small groups of pupils from their own class room. The training course has four objectives: (1) ' To . change teacher behaviors that will increase in-crease the pupil's readiness to respond to discussions; (2) change teacher behavior to decrease teacher participation participa-tion and raise the level of pupil response; (3) to in- crease the teacher's use of probing behaviors in order to guide the pupil to more complete com-plete and thoughtful responses: res-ponses: (4) to reduce teacher teach-er behaviors that interfere with the flow of discussion. Besides Grand county, other oth-er institutions in the operational opera-tional test are South Sanpete School District, Weber State College, and the University of Utah. The same training course will be used at trfe Helen M. Knight Elementary School at a later date this spring. |
