Mr. McClatchy, who last week made a float trip down Grand Canyon with Hatch Expeditions of Vernal, said that he had one 33-foot pontoon pon-toon tvne rubber boat and two smaller craft, which he plans to use on the Cataract Canvon feature, if the preliminary prelim-inary trio proves the regular run feasible. Going with Tex will be Dick Smith, Monticello air service operator; Carl Davjs of Moab, Merlin Cannell, Moab: Mo-ab: Bill Crawley, tour guide from Monument Valley; a , writer for Westways .Magazine, .Maga-zine, official publication ; of the Southern California jAmo Club; and the manager of the Monument Valley Inn. He said they expected to be gone four davs, and will use power downstream from Moab Mo-ab in order to get into the rough water as quickly as possible. "Cataract Canvon is still one of the biggest features on the river." Tex' told The Times- Independent Wednesday. Wednes-day. He indicated that he was hopeful that this cruise would prove that a safe, regularly reg-ularly scheduled commercial trip could be made possible from Moab. On the trip last week, Tex acted as boatman in one of six boats operated bv veteran river man, Ted Hatch, from Lee's . Ferry to Phantom Ranch. At that point, McClatchy Mc-Clatchy left the party, hiked up the Kiabab Trail to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Can-yon, and hitched a ride to Page, where he had left his airplane. He said the trip was made primarly to break-in break-in new boatmen to work for Hatch this year, and was a valuable experience for the Moab river guide. |
