D. S. tabernacle, Salt Lake City planned a full Armistice dsy program pro-gram Saturday. City schools, meanwhile, held their Armistice day celebrations Friday, with speakers stressing the advantages of living in the United States during a period when many nations are once more at war. Salt Lake City plans to give Itself It-self over wholeheartedly to the celebration of the 21st anlversary of the end of the World war. City, county, state and federal offices will be closed throughout the day. Most of the city's food . markets, all banks and finance establishments and some of the Insurance offices will observe the holiday by closing. There will be no msll delivery In the residential districts and one only to business firms. Downtown retail and department de-partment stores will close from 10:30 to 11:30 a. m. during parade time. Liquor Stores te Close Liquor stores will remain closed, but will be open until 11:30 p. m. Frldsy. The Salt Lake stock exchange will be dosed. The parade gets sway from temple tem-ple square at 11:02 a. m, colorful with bands, drum corps, vetersns of three wars, auxiliary and R. O. T. C detachments; Boy Scouts, Gold Star mothers and army, navy and marine units. The official reviewing re-viewing stand will be In front of the post office, where Governor Henry H. Blood and others will review re-view the procession. In the afternoon attention will center on the football game between be-tween the Universities ef Utah and Hawaii. The night program will be at the L. D. S. tabernacle, starting at 7:30 p. m, when the Fort Douglas Doug-las military band will open the ceremony. Speakers will stress American democracy and the duly of every citizen toward it Parade Booth The parade, beginning at the Brlgham Young monument at temple tem-ple square, wttl move south on Main street te Fourth South street, -east to State street, then north on South Temple street ! William J. Higbee will be parade marshal. Among other observsnces will bs the presentation at Mt Olivet cemetery at 2 p. m. of a granite bench to Oliver O. Howard post of the G. A. R, by the post's W. R. C auxiliary unit The bench will be accepted by Ira Storm vs. post commander and only surviving mentber. Mrs. Lillian M. Lockerbie, president presi-dent of the W. R. C, will make the presentation. Dean Franklin L, Gibson conducted con-ducted services Friday morning at Rowland Hall chapel la observance of the armistice. The Service Star legion will present pre-sent a special Armistice day program pro-gram Saturday at 10:30 a. m. at Memory grove, with H. J. Haltoa the principal speaker. |
