Show SHIP WRECKED, 700 ARE LOST 395 Survivors Rescued Off Japan WAKKANAL-HOKKAIDO. Japan, Ja-pan, Dec. 13 UP More than 700 Russians, Including women and children, were missing today and believed drowned or frozen to death in the wreck of the Russian steamer steam-er Indlglrka on the treacherous coast of Hokkaido. The Japanese ship Karafuto Maru arrived here with 395 survivors sur-vivors from the crowded Russian fishing service vessel which went aground In a blizzard yesterday on the east coast of Hokkaido, northernmost north-ernmost of the mam Japanese islands. Survivors, most of whom were suffering from exposure, said the ship carried 1100 persons, fishermen, fisher-men, their wives and children, and a crew of 39. (The scene of the wreck Is on one route between fishing stations on the Kamchatka peninsula and Vladivostok.) Vla-divostok.) (Reports received In Tokyo said 87 were known to have died on the Indigirka.) Survivors said the Indigirka sent out one SOS before huge waves smashed her radio room. Because of the blinding snow she was un-sble un-sble to give her position accurately. The storm held possible rescue ships In port throughout yesterday. The survivors said they did not know the fate of their missing comrades. The Indigirka was a ship of only 2690 tons, but vessels plying between be-tween the northern fishing ports and Vladivostok often carry large passenger lists. |
