Show Prevailing Opinions 1 Comment of the American Pre ' , limited leisure Is set as the sole worthwhile goal of existence. This does not sound like America Amer-ica or the spirit of Americans. No one in his right senses defends sweatshop labor, unsanitary working work-ing conditions or starvation wages. This country was built on a lusty joy in the fact of work. The founders of the United States did not work because somebody wss standing over them with a whip making them toil They worked because they gloried in it Their axes carved townsites out of virgin vir-gin forests. Their adzes and planes made rough boards for their homes. Their sweat created Left Hand Turn Inconvenient as it would be to have left-hand turns prohibited generally at intersections of city streets and ststa highways, we may come to It unless some means can be found to curb the reckless abuse of this privilege. The appalling ap-palling casualty lists In which left-hsnd turns figure Is making this one of the major factors la traffio problems. To avoid this inconvenience and confusion, traffic authorities are studying possible methods of putting put-ting down the reckless left-hand turners. Almost any motorist can testify to the frequency with which this menace is encountered, and that for eVery casualty there is an almost miraculous escape due to quick action on the part of the obstructed motorist and the fortunate accident that opposing op-posing traffic gives bun elbow room to dodge a crash. No doubt concerted action could be effective in correcting the abuse. Yet the left-hand turner.' while the Immediate target is not alwaya solely to blame. Too many straight-aheadera entirely ignore the right of a motorist who has stopped before entering or crossing cross-ing a traffic stream. . This ia ob- . served on state highways and on city boulevards. The left-hand turn or "stop" signal provisions of the traffic regulations do not give the other fellow the right of wsy; they call for yielding right of way to a vehicle so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. Yet on highways and "stop" boulevards bou-levards a whole stream of vehicles goes by without conscience while the driver who hss obeyed the law finds his own rights blithely disregarded. There ia need for strict dealing with reckless left-hand turners and with equally reckless drivers who disregard the right of way of the left-hand turner, or crosser, who has complied with the rules. Unless these twin evils are curbed, the rest of us may be put to going go-ing around and around the blocks to get headed left Saa Francisco Fran-cisco Chronicle. On the Wrong Track Regardleaa 6f any relation between be-tween employer and employe, an entirely new and startling social concept is being fostered in this country in regard to work. The very idea of work itself is being set up as a potential menace, something, to be combated. Un- villages and built churches. They trekked across great wastes, serosa deserts and mountains moun-tains and they worked as they went Their work was their life. When they found time for play they played hard. But they did not grumble during the time of toil, with one eye on the clock and hate for their tasks In their hearts. Usually they labored from aunup to sundown. Fortunately the time of sunup to sundown labor is gone. But if the elemental spirit of joy in work for work's sake goes, too, there will be a aad fata in store for this nation of drones.
