Show MAYOR FIRM IN HIS SUPPORT OF SHEETS i Mayor Thompson has not yet sent to the Council his appointment for Chief of Police, a position now vacant through the resignation of Samuel Paul. It is, however, regarded as virtually certain that he has determined to give the place to George L. Sheets. It is also equally certain that the ' Council, or at least the majority of that body, will strenuously oppose the appointment, ap-pointment, and that a long-drawn-out and bitter contest will follow. Until the Mayor makes his appointment appoint-ment and the Council confirms It. Capt. J. B. Burbidge will hold the position of acting Chief. Capt. Burbidge might secure the appointment himself, but he Is a Democrat, a fact that apparently puts him outside the pale of serious consideration in this regard. |
