TORPEDO TEST IS SUCCESSFUL Experiment to Ascertain Effect of Shell on Modern Battleship Battle-ship Results Satisfactorily Off Pier at Sandy Hook. NEW YORK, June 23. -'An armored caisson, representing the side of & battleship, bat-tleship, was sunk by a torpedo shell exploded a short distance from it off the pier at the Sandy Hook proving grounds yesterdiy in an experiment to ascertain the effect of a torpedo on a modern battleship. The caisson, which took the place of the battleship 1 the test, was made of the strongest materials available. The torped- shell, fired at its center, was the same as is fired from the torpedo tor-pedo tubes of the battleships and torpedo tor-pedo boat destroyers. When the smoke that followed the explosion cleared away the caisson had disappeared. The caisson will be raised and examined.
