Show High School Track, Tennis Teams Schedule Busy Spring Season Springville high school track and field participants partici-pants are busy as bees this week with the entire campus cam-pus buzzing with enthusiasm over the major spring sport. ' On Wednesday afternoon (yesterday) (yes-terday) the annual Nebo district track and field meet was held at-Spanish at-Spanish Fork. Saturday, April 30, the Red Devils will compete with two teams in the annual Utah High School Activities Association Relay Carnival in the University of Utah stadium. Teams entered will be in the medley relay and the 440. The events will be run off beginning at 2 p. m. On May 7 the Region Three meet will be held at the Y stadium with winners qualifying for the state track meet to be held also at the Y this year the following week. , S. II. S. Stars Shine . . . Participants from the Red Devil camp showed up well in the Y Relay Re-lay carnival last week-end, with both track and field participants and tennis stars winning top honors. hon-ors. Gordon Smith, one of Springville Spring-ville high school's top all-around athletes, entered the All-around events and placed fifth. Gordon, placed second in the 100, tied for first in the broad jump, came in second in the shot, was second in the low hurdles. He won top honors hon-ors in the discus with a 124-foot throw, and placed second in tha javelin. Lex McKee of Millard won the championship. Morgan Thomas did himself and the Red Devils proud, with a victory vic-tory in the 100-yard dash and the 220 Thomas ran the 100 in 10.3 and the 220 in 22.9. Neil Beardall placed second in the 440, and Ronald Ron-ald Jensen came in third in the ! half-mile. Russell Sumsion placed i fourth in the same event. Spring- I ville's 880-yard relay team, com posed of Grant Lloyd, Arthur Reid, Richard Sumsion and Morgan Mor-gan Thomas, won this event with a 1:35.3 time. In the tenis competition, Jim-mie Jim-mie Thorn, Snow invitational winner win-ner at Ephraim, and DeMoine Blackley walked off with the doubles crown, after surviving several sev-eral qualifying rounds of keen competition. These players have been chalking up victories all during dur-ing the season and are two of the topmost high school tennis stars : of the state. |
