Show Authority Speaks On Indian Culture Mrs. Mildred Dillman of Roosevelt, Roose-velt, national authority on Ute Indian In-dian culture, was in Springville Tuesday and gave two interesting lectures on types of Indian culture, stressing particularly that of the Ute Indians of the Uintah Basin area. Mrs. Dillman explained how the Indians had been at the mercy of the white man, who moved him from one locality to another. She compared the cultures of various periods to show the progress made by the various tribes, and noted that the white man is using some of the medicines and other bits of information known to the Indians of many years ago. For example, she cited the Indian In-dian carrot which the Indian has used as a medicine for many years and which scientists now find to contain pennecillin. In connection with her talk, Mrs. Dillman displayed a number of baskets and other articles representing repre-senting various cultures, and she also exhibited many pieces of clothing and bead work done by the Ute Indians. She was assisted by an Indian princess. The entertainment was sponsored spon-sored by the Home Culture club as an art benefit. |
